"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Power

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: power

Can power be a bad thing?  If yes, in what ways?

What is the difference between power and strength?

Would you rather be powerful or strong?

How is man's power different than the power of God?

Let me know what you think!!

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

  1. Since the translates different words into the word "power" I always look to see whether He is taking strength, ability, or authority when He uses it. I think any one of those things can be a bad thing when man tries to wield it in his own might and for his own purposes. I guess that's because that gopher snake is just as prone to chase us "up" as to chase us down.

As to how our power is different from Gods? Well, all of our power is in the cord. His is the source.

  5. Power can certainly be good or bad. Difference between power and strength? I'll have to think about that for awhile. Thank you for the challenge.

  6. Can power be a bad thing? If yes, in what ways?

I believe that power can potentially be a very bad thing. It can put people in position to use other people. It can be misused to harm people, to lie and steal, to take away personal freedoms. What's the old saying? "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely."

What is the difference between power and strength?

In my mind, power is something that is a matter of position relative to other people. It puts one in a position where they can rule over others. Strength to me is more a matter of physical ability or personal character. Ironically, many very weak people have wielded much power - much to the detriment of other people.

Would you rather be powerful or strong?

I would definitely much rather be strong. I would rather have strength of character than have power. I have no desire to rule over others - but I would like to have the inner strength to keep me "in line"!

How is man's power different than the power of God?

Man's power is an illusion. Because God is the only One who is omnipotent. He is the ultimate cause of all things, the only One in total control. The Bible tells us that He decides the leaders of the world. That being said, God's power puts or allows certain humans to come into power, as His divine wisdom deems best for His ultimate purposes.

One last word: When I am weak, then I am strong - because of Christ Jesus!

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)
