"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Messiah

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: Messiah

What does the word Messiah mean to you?

How was Jesus different than the Messiah expected by the Jews?

In your life, what is the most surprising thing about Jesus, the Messiah?

Let me know what you think!!

"The woman said, 'I know the Messiah is coming--the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.'  Then Jesus told her, 'I Am the Messiah!'"  (John 4:25-26)

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

  3. Well, I "know" it means the Christ, the Annointed one. To me, that says that He is not only capable of saving but has the authority to do it. My class has been studying Advent for the month of December. I've reminded them regularly that Advent isn't just about the first coming, but a look backward that looks forward to the second. The first Coming was surprising to those who expected an earthly or political Prince Charming. What makes us think that what we are expecting in His second coming will be anything like what we're expecting? I'm always a little gobstruck (can you be a little gobstruck?) at the people who think they have a firm grip on Biblical prophecy. If Daniel actually saw the things he saw standing at the elbow of an angel yet DIDN'T understand it all, what makes modern men so sure of themselves? Just a thought that I think when I'm thinking...

As to the most surprising thing to me about Jesus as MY Messiah? Well, that one is easy. I will never stop being amazed that that Jesus came to seek and save ME. Why He would want such a mess is beyond comprehension, and I mean that sincerely. The fact that He has made me love Him the way I do is a greater miracle than any other I have personally witnessed.

  4. The Messiah, the Anointed one. God became a man to save us from our sin. He is the prince of peace whose kingdom has no end.

    Have a Merry Christmas Sharon.

  5. What does the word Messiah mean to you?

I know that it means *anointed* - but to me, it means Hope, The Promised One, The Rescuer. I think it's a thrilling word.

How was Jesus different than the Messiah expected by the Jews?

The Jews were looking for a Messiah that would match their human expectations - a political deliverer, a conquering king. Jesus was NOTHING like what we humans expected (aren't you glad?!). He came in the most humble form, a baby, and brought deliverance and victory in a way that we never looked for. God used His *foolishness* to put to shame the "wisdom" of man.

In your life, what is the most surprising thing about Jesus, the Messiah?

That He was not the meek and mild Savior that I thought He was. I had a picture of Him sorta based on those old paintings - slightly effeminate even. When I actually read through the Gospels, I was surprised by how strong Jesus was. He was clever, intelligent, occasionally argumentative, sometimes sarcastic, and not at all intimidated by others. He stood His ground, and always spoke Truth. I continue to be attracted to the fact that He reached out to those who NEEDED and WANTED Him - He was a champion of the *underdogs* in life.

    Sharon's Acrostic Dictionary:

    S avior
    S on of God
    I AM
    A lmighty

Two wonderful books that I would recommend about a *surprising* Jesus:

The Jesus I Never Knew, by Philip Yancey
    Beautiful Outlaw, by John Eldredge

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)
