QUAINT WORDS - New December Feature!

Welcome to "Quaint Words!"

This is a feature that I have done before, and I thought it would fun to reprise it for the month of December!

These posts will contain thoughts, poems, and prayers from old books that I have found at antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales (with an occasional treasure from a bookstore).

I love the rhythm and sound of the older English language, and am blessed by other believers who have gone before me!

"To some the love of the ringing praises of men made strong appeal and they forgot that the silence of death hushes all but the voice of God.  Others for the love of bodily ease set a-hungering for the delicacies of this world and sapped their stalwartness in their service of their King.  Yet others again have let the love of a fellow-creature steal in upon a heart that should have had a single Lover and Him upon the altar-throne.  So they all let other and mean loves come into their lives and cheat their God of an undivided heart...

Jesus, save me from my own heart's truancy.  I know it well that You must be the only object of my love and in my thankful moments I would have it always so - but then!  Away I go, back to the tinseled, loud-mouthed world, and many, many a time my heart is weaned from You, at least in little things. Teach me, dearest Master, teach this backward child that Yours is the only love worth having, that You and Heaven are the only goals worth striving for."

(From "My Changeless Friend" by Francis P. Le Buffe, c. 1921)

"...'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'..."  (Luke 10:27, NIV)

*What is the one thing that seems to *steal* you away from the Lord?

  1. Perfect time to add something new Sharon. If I'm not careful checking emails and reading blogs can grab my attention first thing in the morning instead of spending those first waking moments with the Lord. Hope you enjoy a wonderful weekend.

  2. I think this is a great new feature to add, Sharon.
I love the way the King James version of the bible sounds compared to the others because of the old English...so much easier to memorize scripture when it sounds poetic like that.
The quote you shared convicts me too...I tend to love and devote most of my heart to my family...especially my husband now that the kids are grown.
I guess I should remember that it is God who created these whom I love so much...therefore they are from Him and of Him!
I think I used to give too much attention to my home too...but I have gotten lazier as of late, and would rather read blogs about the Lord and talk to my fellow Christians...Hey, maybe it is OK to be lazy sometimes if we are using our time to better enrich our relationships? ;)

  3. Kindred Sharon with Quaint Word - you and me both. I LOVE reading my vintage editions for the very reasons you've stated here. I do remember when you had this as a feature but you scaled back with your move. A great excerpt today. The words rolling off my tongue are like honey!
    Joy!

  4. I do love what you shared here. But Andy has to memorize the King James Version at school and it is very hard for the youngins to grasp the meaning in this version - now that is just my humble opiniom! love, sandie

  5. Hi Sharon! I love your phrase 'heart's truancy'. That really paints a vivid picture for me. I think overeating is my big thing. It makes me mad, and then I feel not worthy and you know, the whole shame deal.
I am beginning to see in a better way, how stupid that spiral is. No one can change it but me. What the heck am I waiting for? (Christmas???)

I have a special love for the older spiritual authors too. I just seem to 'click' with their imagery. We have that in common :) Whatever leads us to him is a good thing!
    Happy St. Nicholas Day!

  6. I have a devotional blog, as you know, I am on Pinterest, I am selling jewelry on Etsy and now I have joined Facebook to keep up with my son while he is away for a year in New Zealand. All of those things can take me away from more time with the Lord...IF I allow them to. I have to be very careful to not spend too much time on the web.

  7. I liked the description of the heart's truancy. I think what steals me is anxiety and worry and fear. I need to remember his promises when I'm being truant and attend his school of always being there, never abandoning me nor forsaking me.

  8. Very interesting......I use several translations including KJV and NKJV...."Hearts truancy" is great a great description. So easy for me to get wrapped up in myself...Keeping my focus on Jesus is guarding my heart above all things.

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)

Thanks for your comments - it is such a joy to be sharing my journey with friends like YOU!
