CAN'T I JUST STAY IN BED?

I have been sick, folks.

For a week.

With some stupid runny nose, clogged sinuses, sore throat, dry cough, headache, no energy, huge BLAH thing.

I don't know how you *do* sick.

Some people are like grumpy old bears, and just want to be left alone.

Me?

I turn into a toddler, wanting constant attention and company, and special things to eat.

I've been known to whine.

Being sick isn't fun, is it?

We've all had times when we just get knocked out by the "latest bug" touring the human population we're exposed to.

I guess it's my turn.

I’d like to write about how wonderfully God made our bodies.

How He created them to instantly come to our defenses.  (This is the reason for multiple symptoms – it's our body's way of warding off the "bad guys.")

And that is true.

But, the thing that bothers me the most about being sick is how it affects me emotionally.

I get discouraged really easily.

And sad, and fearful, and overwhelmed.

I become a *bed potato*(a close cousin of a couch potato).

Yes, when we get sick, bed rest is a good idea.  It allows our immune system to gear up for the fight.

But after a while, bed rest can become bed stuck

No, I am still not feeling well.

But I also know that I'm sliding into that place where I just want to roll over and never get up.

*That place…*

The place where I realize that a local flock of blue jays have nested in the knot of hair that has evolved on the top of my head – (when did I last brush it out??)

The place where I realize that my mouth aroma might closely resemble "morning mouth" – at 7 o'clock in the evening – on the second or third day.

The place where I realize that I have been putting deodorant on the outside of my shirt – instead of changing clothes, or, for pete's sake, taking a shower!

The place where my face without makeup is beyond frightening – (hey, who needs a Halloween mask?  I'm just practicing…)

Yup.

That place.

The place where "The Hub"s" encouraging words to maybe get up and walk around a little bit is greeted with my moaning…

"Can't I just stay in bed?"

If you can get past feeling awful, being sick is kinda cool.  It gives you a built-in excuse to do nothing for a few days.  To just ignore life, and put *all that important stuff* on hold.

Bills, phone calls, housework, grocery shopping, etc – POOF!

Back in the day, it also bought me a free ticket to stay home from school or work.

Nope, whatever it is, I can't do itI'm SICK.

The problem is that I get discouraged, and then I am tempted to crawl under the covers and forget life.

Don't you have days when you wake up and just want to say:

"Can't I just stay in bed?"

Life is tough.

Facing it is tougher.

And I am convinced that the enemy of our souls does everything in his power to keep us *out of the game.*

He loves when we figuratively crawl under the covers.

Because, you see, a bunch of spiritual *bed potatoes* are no threat.

And this is his missionto make God's followers weak and ineffectual.

To make us spiritually sick.

It is this realization that made me force myself out of bed this morning, to actually face the day.

The germs are still fighting, and I'm still fighting back – and yes, I'm still feeling lousy.

But, I cannot give up.

You see, I heard the Lord calling me this morning, and I answered:

"Can't I just stay in bed?"

His gentle reply?

"No, I've got things for you to do."

That's the mission, the challenge – to face life.

To pursue God and His purposes at all costs, even when we don't feel like it.

To walk when we want to crumble.

To rise when we stumble.

Because, like that familiar saying, I want the enemy of my soul to mutter:

"Uh oh, she's up."

Have you been *spiritually sick* lately?  Are you ready to get up?!

We are pressed on every side by troubles,
but we are not crushed.
We are perplexed,

but not driven to despair.
We are hunted down,

but never abandoned by God.
We get knocked down,

but we are not destroyed.
Through suffering,

our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus
so that the life of Jesus

may also be seen in our bodies.

(2 Corinthians 4:8-10, NLT)

(NOTE: Per the suggestion of a very faithful reader, I have changed the color of all Scripture references, hoping to make them easier to read  another shade of red, to set them apart from my own words.  May God bless you with His Word!)

"Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all." (Psalm 34:19, ESV)

"…for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again…"
(Proverbs 24:16, NIV)

"You have allowed me to suffer much hardship, but you will restore me to life again and lift me up…" (Psalm 71:20, NLT)

"Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life.  You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes; with your right hand you save me." (Psalm 138:17, NIV)

"'LORD, help!' they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.  He sent out his word and healed them…" (Psalm 107:19-20, NLT)

"'I will give you back your health and heal your wounds,' says the LORD." (Jeremiah 30:17, NLT)

"'For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.'" (Jeremiah 31:25, ESV)

"O LORD my God, I cried to you for help, and you restored my health."
(Psalm 30:2, NLT)

"Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you.  He will not permit the godly to slip and fall." (Psalm 55:22, NLT)

“Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the LORD holds them by the hand.” (Psalm 37:24, NLT)

"Do not gloat over me, my enemy!  Though I have fallen, I will rise.  Though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light." (Micah 7:8, NIV)

"'…I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you.'" (Exodus 23:22, NIV)

"When you go out to fight your enemies and you face horses and chariots and an army greater than your own, do not be afraid.  The LORD your God…is with you! When you prepare for battle, the priest must come forward to speak to the troops. He will say to them, 'Listen to me…Do not be afraid as you go out to fight your enemies today!  Do not lose heart or panic or tremble before them.  For the LORD your God is going with you!  He will fight for you against your enemies, and he will give you victory!'" (Deuteronomy 20:1-4, NLT)

  1. i don't like laying in bed. I am way too active to want that so I force myself to get out of bed, even when sick. My mom's cure for "I'm too sick to go to school" was "Okay, stay in bed. That is it." By noon it was so boring I was ready to go to school! I have found the best way to get well is to get up. Sorry. :)

  2. Hope you feel better soon, Sharon. Such wise timely words you wrote. I have been drsined by a recent event and I haven't functioned like I should have. My hubby reminded me last night despite it all, I have a blessed good life. I heed to cling to the good and to God and not let the enemy sreal my joy.

  4. Aw, I'm so sorry to hear you've been this sick, Sharon! Praying for God's healing on your body and on your emotions. I agree that it's definitely hard emotionally when we can't do what we want to physically. May God's grace surround you!

  6. I needed a little humor today, and can so relate as I also have been sick..I pushed myself to get to the gym this morning but boy was it a push after a few days in bed. Love your truthtelling here, just sometimes we don't want to face the brutal world, why should we?! Because God has some work for us..and we need God's grace to get out of bed! Great post..visiting from #smallwonders today

  8. Oh yes, I've had those "bed" days, weeks, seasons. Sometimes I'm grateful for a little time to just vegetate. Other times, you are so right, it is straight up warfare trying to keep us down. I think the longer I walk with the Lord the more I learn when not feeling myself has turned into not feeling Him. Hope that you start feeling whole very soon. Thanks for inviting us in even with morning mouth and au natural. ;)

  9. Sharon, thanks for sharing this. It's so hard to keep going sometimes both physically and spiritually, but God gives strength. I'm so thankful he is always with us. I'm your neighbor at #TestimonyTuesday. Blessings to you!

  10. Aww...so sorry you have been under the weather, my friend! When I am sick, I cannot stay in the bed though. I can barely stay in the bed during the hours of 11 PM and 5 AM! Give me a great couch or recliner to lounge on though...AND the remote. Usually when I get sick, my eyes are all watery so blogging is out of the question. Thanks to the Lord that He understands and gives us the strength to carry on! I hope you are soon feeling great again and as always you a never fail to use your life experiences to minister to the rest of us. Take good care and God Bless you!

  11. Awwwww sorry to hear you are fighting sickness.....we just speak to those germs and tell them to die in the name of Jesus. We pray healing into your body, giving thanks for a strong immune system that is fighting hard and for the healing power of Jesus. I did sickness for too many years and seldom can take it "lying down" now. It makes me angry. Ha.....But during those times we rest and our loving spouses support and encourage us...so does our loving God. He does not want us spiritually sick, you are so right....love the analogy. Take care and praying you hop out of bed with gusto real soon....

  12. I have to admit I know exactly what you mean. I've been sick so many times and this time I'm not bouncing back as quickly as I would like to. Hope your feeling better now....((HUGS))

  13. Sharon, I am so sorry to hear that you are not feeling well. When I am sick, which thankfully is rare, I just want to be left alone. Let me fight the bug in silence. As a matter of fact, when I had my hysterectomy I sent my husband home that night. There was no use in him staying at the hospital with me. I had nurses that were only a push button away. I'm so thankful that our bodies were made by God to tell us when something is amiss and to fight off, as best they can, the offending agent. Get well soon, friend. Thanks for joining us at The Loft.

  14. Yes. The will of our Father bids us to get up, spiritually first. It's all about attitude and perspective, those wonderful attributes of our gift of free will.

Hope you do get to feeling better, Sharon. The birds are at the door!

  15. Well, it must be catching all the way over here on the East coast. I was flat for two days this week--just got up yesterday, and today--with my head still full and my neck pain blaring and exhaustion hanging over me like the storm clouds emptying rain since Monday all over our region with no end in sight til next week--I'm GOING to work today. Thankful that I work from my home and can look precisely as you described in the first part of your post. Glad I'm not alone. It's good to share our miseries with such commonplaces. And our joys in knowing that taking a few days slower, if not off entirely, is good for the soul. And healing to the body. Be well, my friend!
    Joy!

  16. Holding you in prayer, Sharon. I am sorry you are sick. Take it easy and allow your body to recoup in its time. I often feel that my cold or some illness comes when I have been way overloaded and have not slowed down. The illness keeps me down and once I get through the really tough spot, I am able to spend time in God's Word and with Him. I think He is trying to tell me something. And He is!!

  19. I think we all battle being "spiritually sick" all the time. But thankfully God has not left us defenseless! 2 Cor 10:4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. (NASB)

My favorite quote is from C.S. Lewis - My prayer is that when I die all of hell rejoices that I am out of the fight

    :-D

I found you through the #WomenWithIntention linkup. When you're feeling better, feel free to drop by my plave anytime. It's all about loving God with our minds. I think you'd like it. If you're on Twitter and Pinterest, let me know. I'd love to follow you there!

  22. Being sick is not fun, and yes bed is the best place to recover. I usually don't stay there long unless the sickness includes being dizzy . . then check for infection. By now I am hoping and praying that you are better. Spiritually sick is not good either. I spent a time pouting and that was sort of being sick, but that didn't last praise God. I enjoyed your sweet husband's suggestions to at least get up and walk around a bit. Going outside and breathing the outside air helps me. I am drinking healthy tea hoping to prevent the winter colds that often attack me. Each year they effect my hearing and I can't afford to loose any more hearing. Sharon, I so identify with your open honest, and transparent posts...I, too, have been recovering from a cold and a skin cancer biopsy, which came back "precancerous" yesterday...a praise report for sure, but there's that lingering come-back-in-eight-weeks for a check-up to face on a regular basis...how I have learned to lean on Jesus' everlasting arms in times like these...He is so faithful...always here with me...never leaving or forsaking me...many blessings to you ❤️
