QUAINT WORDS

Welcome to "Quaint Words!”

These posts will contain thoughts, poems, and prayers from old books that I have found at antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales (with an occasional treasure from a bookstore).

I love the rhythm and sound of the older English language, and am blessed by other believers who have gone before me!

(A listing of books and authors, and also dates of individual postings from those books, will be found on my "QUAINT WORDS" page)

"Sometimes in our moments of weakness...when we are faint in courage and feel the growing supremacy of the strong rebellion of our nature against pain and humiliation, we must then go and kneel beside our Lord, prone upon His face and all a-tremble in the Garden of Olives.

It is indeed a dreadful, lowering realization to know that I am the plaything of my fears, the beaten victim of my unruly passion, the coward that quails before a little suffering. I seem so strong at times and I think to have at last reached maturity of years, and then - !

Then it is we must creep within the shadows of Gethsemane and see our Captain Christ grow "sad" and "dazed" and utterly "affrighted" as He allowed the terrors of the Sacred Passion to grow upon Him.

With my own crushed, humiliated soul I must kneel beside Him and thank Him for having deigned to suffer what I so often feel...

Grant me a share of Your own unflinching bravery that I too may battle on."

"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Procrastinate

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: procrastinate

Do you ever procrastinate? About what kinds of things, and why?

Do you think it's ever a sin to procrastinate?

Let me know what you think!!

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

A VERY SPECIAL DATE

Oh my!

I was so excited.

Years (and years!) ago, my church was having a Father-Daughter Dinner.

And my dad had agreed to take me.

Now my dad wasn’t one of those mushy kind of guys. He wasn’t particularly demonstrative. He was a little lean on the compliments. So the fact that he was taking me to this dinner was so very wonderful – and I was beyond thrilled!

I felt like a little princess!

My mom had taken me out to buy a whole new outfit. New dress, new socks and shoes. New little white gloves –

I counted off the days...

And then something happened that had never, ever happened before in my entire childhood.

My dad got sick.

Very sick.

We couldn’t go to the dinner.

I was crushed. I remember being mad at my dad – but not really – and then mad at myself for being mad. I remember crying. I remember feeling so very disappointed – more disappointed than I had ever felt. I remember being so, so sad.

When my dad started feeling better, he told me how sorry he was.

I told him I understood.

I did, but I didn’t…

And then one day, my dad did something that was totally out of character for him. He asked me out on a "date" – to make up for missing the dinner.

WOW!!

So, I got dressed in my new outfit, and wore my new gloves. And we went out to lunch, a fancy lunch, in a beautiful restaurant downstairs at a department store in Pasadena.

You can probably imagine how a ten-year-old girl felt!

China dishes, and actual silver silverware. Crystal drinking glasses, linen napkins.

And here’s the best part – there was a fashion show, too!

I can still remember the models coming up to our table, and talking about their outfits – to ME!! Like I was all grown-up, and could actually purchase something! I can remember people coming up to my dad and I – complimenting me on my very nice behavior.

Do you know what?

It was a perfect day.

And I was actually glad that my dad had gotten sick – just so I could have this time with him instead. Just so I could go to this very special lunch instead. Just so I could feel this kind of happiness instead – the "joy after a really big disappointment" kind of happiness.

This was so much better than what I had wanted in the first place.

Ever find yourself really wanting something – really praying long and hard about it? Waiting eagerly for a dream to be fulfilled, or a long-awaited prayer to be answered?

Ever felt like you were all dressed up, and ready to go – just to be disappointed?

God knows.

And it makes Him sad when we’re sad.

It hurts Him when we’re hurting.

But love doesn’t leave us there – stranded in disappointment. His perfect Love is deeper than that.

And because He loves us so much – He doesn’t always give us everything we want.

Because sometimes perfect Love has something even better in mind!!

Can you wait for His timing, His way?

Can you trust that it’s something even better than what you wanted in the first place?

Can you believe that no matter what does or doesn’t happen in this life – there is an eternal banquet awaiting you?

Complete with the finest finery you have ever seen…

And you’ll be wearing your best outfit – the new clothes of perfect righteousness.

The honor of your presence is requested!

JUST BETWEEN ME AND GOD

I look up to the mountains - does my help come from there?

Sharon, watch for Me. I am ever present, and always near.

My help comes from the Lord, who made the heaven and earth!

Sharon, yes, I am the Creator. And I am able to take care of you, in all circumstances, forever.

He will not let me stumble.

Sharon, you will make mistakes. But I will always hold your hand. You will not fall away from Me.

The one who watches over me will not slumber, and He never sleeps.

Sharon, I have My eyes on you all the time. Even when you get up in the morning and when you go to bed at night. I'm on watch every moment you breathe.

The LORD himself watches over me!

Sharon, yes, I AM is watching you. The one true God. Me, your friend.

The LORD stands beside me as my protective shade.

Sharon, you will not be consumed by the heat of temptation, or the scorching sun of sin. I will keep you in the Shadow of My wings.

The LORD keeps me from all harm.

Sharon, if I am for you, who can ever be against you?

He watches over my life.

Sharon, I saw every day of your life before you were ever born. I recorded them all in My book. There isn't a moment that isn't on My calendar.

The LORD keeps watch over me as I come and go.

Sharon, I am like an Eagle. My eyes are focused on you. I know when you sit down, and I know when you stand up.

He is with me both now and forever.

Sharon, my dear child. I am with you every step you take in this life. And you will be with Me forever.

For God loved the world so much...

Sharon, I so loved YOU...

...that He gave His one and only Son...

Sharon, I gave My Son, Jesus, for YOU...

...so that everyone who believes in Him...

Sharon, how I celebrated the day YOU believed...

...will not perish...

Sharon, YOU will never die...

...but have eternal life.

Sharon, I am anxiously awaiting your arrival at My side in eternity. I'm looking forward to your homecoming. I can't wait to see YOU!

My dear friends, put your name into these words - and be encouraged by the wondrous love of our Lord!
