"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Rest

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: rest

What does the word rest mean?

What makes you rest-less in your life, and what do you do to find rest?

What does it mean to rest in God?

Let me know what you think!!

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

  1. This is a great post, and I like how you spelled out "blog". Ah rest, it is such a blessing to wake up in the morning rested. When I don't sleep well, I notice the difference, believe me.

  2. Hi Sharon,

As I have been feeling a bit off colour this week, I have today just rested. But last night for varied reasons panic overtook me and I realised I needed to rest in The Lord, so that is what I am trying to do, look to Him, not the circumstances.

Hope you are okay, do miss hearing from you.

    God Bless - Nita

  3. I am learning to rest in God, my life is in a period of change, and when anxiety sets in, I often find that God will point out to me that I need to rest in him.

  4. To me resting in God is total reliance. I don't have to worry, to try and work out problems, or to feel fretful. I have to choose rest, but when I do my heart changes.

  5. I get very restless thinking about all that is going on in our world today. I'm thankful that God is ultimately in control and His will will ultimately be done. This gives me rest and hope.
    Blessings,

  6. What does the word rest mean?

To me, it means the absence of strife or turmoil or noise. It means not being anxious, it means being content. Rest is a blessed state of calm confidence. It is not feeling tired or discouraged.

What makes you rest-less in your life, and what do you do to find rest?

The influence of the world makes me rest-less. Write out a long list of the many, many things that serve to distract us or wear us down - those things make me rest-less. Restless is being agitated and nervous - spending weary time in fruitless pursuits.

In earthly terms, I like to do these things to find rest: Take a nap, take a walk, read a book, watch TV, talk to a friend, write something, take a bath. Being in nature gives me a restful feeling. I especially like basking in the sun or looking at the stars.

As far as spiritually, prayer brings me rest. But more than anything, perhaps, reading God's Word gives me soul rest. There have been many times when I have literally felt - if I can just read my Bible, I'll be OK. And God always seems to offer me a word of comfort or encouragement.

What does it mean to rest in God?

It means to abide in the Truth that He is in control, He is always with me, He loves me forever, and ALL of His promises will come true. Resting means taking the eternal view - and knowing that what happens now in this world is NEVER the last word. I have peace with God, reconciled and saved through His Son, so nothing will ever diminish or destroy the eternal rest I have in the future.

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)
