IN THE SOCK DRAWER

So, the Mayan Apocalypse did not occur…

Shocking.

However, because I was counting on that asteroid to hit Earth and smash it to smithereens (not really), I didn't really think about any New Year's resolutions.

Go figure.

In fact, it's been hard even thinking about the New Year.  I've got that post-Christmas *blah* thing going on.  Not depressed, not sad – just blah.

I was talking to my sister-in-law the other day, and she was sharing with me her *blahness* too.  She said to me, "I'm in the sock drawer."

I laughed out loud.

"In the sock drawer?" I questioned.

"Yes."

Her explanation was adorable.  It went something like this: You know that sock drawer – where all the socks just get shoved in willy-nilly, often mismatched or unmatched, a jumbled mess – and then the door is just shut tight.  Dark and forgotten – just a sock stuffed away, laying around doing nothing.

An Urban Dictionary explains it this way: A term used to explain a type of day that you are having where nothing goes right.

I got it.

In the sock drawer.

Yup, I'm also feeling like a sock – a bit worn out and frazzled(but can I at least be one of those striped fuzzy ones that I wear to bed??)

But, this is the time of year when we get that "fresh start" – a "do-over" – a "new beginning"…so I'd better get my act together.

'Cuz it's the time to make resolutions!

So, what kinds of things am I thinking about?

Diet?

Exercise?

Yes, I probably need to put those at the top of my list.  Just like last year…and the year before that…and before that…ahem.

But, that seems like such a sock-like cop-out.

I think the first step in making THIS year's resolutions should be getting a good grasp on the process of what I'm actually doing.

What does the word resolution even mean, I wonder?

Definition:  The state or quality of being resolute; firm determination; a resolving to do something; a course of action determined or decided on.

So I look up resolute, too:

Definition:  Admirably purposeful, determined, and unwavering.  Firm, decided, resolved, decisive.

Hmmm.

I begin to see that I have not chosen to be very resolute about too many things in my life lately.  I've spent too much time in the sock drawer.

However, God doesn't want socksat least not socks in a drawer.  He wants socks that are worn inside of shoes that go out and do HIS business.

He wants movers and shakers.

He wants people who are RESOLUTE.

So, that's my resolution for this year.  To become a more resolute personadmirably purposeful, determined, and unwavering.

And as I thought about that, I also came up with my word for 2013.

It's interesting – in the last couple of years, the word that I've picked has somehow had a lot to do with the way the year played out.

2011 – Determined.  2012 – Overcome.

So, as I contemplated 2013, I thought about the words peace and hope. Great words, definitely things that I would love to influence my upcoming year.  But, I wanted to hear what God had to say.  I didn't want to "plan" my word – I wanted it to come from Him.

And I had a feeling that when I heard it, I would know it.

Yup, I did.

In a random conversation with a friend, as I was talking about my *sockness*, she said something along the lines that what I really needed in my life right now was – direction.

Bingo.

That is my Word for 2013 – DIRECTION.

(No, not bingo...)

It's what I want, what I hope for, what will give me peacea firm word of direction from the Lord as to what He wants me to do with my life at this point.

Direction, Lord.

I pray that You will give me this – and then give me the power to be resolute about following Your directions!!

Take this sock OUT of the drawer, and direct me INTO Your purpose, and help me to OBEY!

******HAPPY NEW YEAR******

  1. I could have written this one Sharon! Those 2 words SO apply to me right now... direction and resolute. 2013 is going to be a measure of how determined I am to be resolute in whatever direction He gives me. I am so ready, and I feel the wind of change in the air.

    Love you!

  2. It's okay to take a nap and re-cup in the sock drawer (I feel a bit the same)... but as I wrote on my blog today, may you find God's wonder in your pocket - a pocketful of His miracles shining hope on your new year!

  3. I love the sock drawer concept; I think I'm in there too and I think it needs to be reorganized.

I love your word for the year, Sharon! I think it is a great one, especially since it was given to you by God. I too have a word, I just need to blog about it sometime :)

May you have a happy new directional year!

  4. Great post, Sharon! And great word for 2013! I actually have a similar word, at least my focus is similar, anyways. I just posted about it on my blog...at http://christintheclouds.blogspot.com/2013/01/a-new-year-new-word.html
Praying you have a year full of God's direction!

  5. I was laughing so hard about the sock drawer..nodding in agreement..and totally understanding since we organized my son's room yesterday and a pile of socks were left at the end....but I stopped the laughing to continue to read.
Direction...that is a good word and I look forward to how God will walk it out in your life...as He establishes your path

  6. I love this, Sharon. Many days, I feel like the sock drawer. :)

Direction - that is a wonderful word. Although I didn't post, my word this year is intentional. Being intentional about my writing, about listening and obeying God's call in my life, intentional about losing weight...

Thank you so much for stopping by. I'm posting almost exclusivly at my new blog (hard to keep up both). I wish you a very happy new year, and I hope to get around to visiting here more often.

    Blessings,
    Joan

  8. Chock full of great words jumping out of that sock drawer of yours, Sharon! Direction is like air and water to me - but only if it's the Lord's direction! My words for the past two years have been Grace and Humility - a rough patch of things, to be sure, and I've learned much on that score. Going into 2013, though, it is all about Faith and Trust - like never before! I will be mining Psalm 23 for some time . . . and hope to be blogging about it soon!
    Happy New Year, milady!

  9. Love.... luvluvluvloooove... your word!

That is exactly what I need in my life. Too bad it's not my theme for the year. Maybe I should change and copy cat you.

    Dont worry. I won't.

I will just try to be inspired by you because I need some direction in my life too. I will say that I'm trying to hop out of the sock drawer too. It's where I'm going when I get out of there that still remains a mystery.

I just have one request of God. I really hope He directions you in MY direction. Just, as Sharon says, sayin'...

And I actually picture you to be a striped socks to bed sort of girl.

  10. Hi Sharon,
Funny thing, diet and exercise is something I am planning this year. Losing weight has been my plan for the last three years...
I love your word, direction and also your sock drawer analogy. For me this year is gaining victory in the area of worry and fear is a big on. I pray that you have a joyjul and blessed 2013.

  11. Love the sock drawer story, but dear Sharon, you are far from lost and forgotten!
We are "going somewhere" this year- only God knows where, but I love that you keep stepping!
Let us all let Him lead!
    Love you-Janet

  13. Direction. I've found I need it more as time passes. Raising my children was my direction for so long. No option--and I loved it. But my youngest turns 20 in 4 days. My life is changing directions and I do want God to plan the rest of my life. (And I'd really love for Him to send me the map!) I hope you are adjusting to your new home and life.

  15. This was so good. I don't want to be in the sock drawer! I've often wondered if there is a sock demon in there. Who else would steal only one sock from each pair?!
