"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Uphold

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: uphold

What does the word uphold mean to you?

In what ways does God personally uphold you?

What is one verse that serves to uphold you with God's Truth?

Let me know what you think!!

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."  (Isaiah 41:10)

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

  1. When I think of the word uphold, I think of being kept in an upward position. Like anyone my life goes through ups & downs but it's God that holds my life together.

  2. Uphold . . . the verse that immediately comes to my mind is Hebrews 3:13 "But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness." Upholding seems to be a community word - it speaks to our unity and responsibility in the body of Christ.

I know I am upheld by the prayers and encouragement of other Christians and by the peace of God in my heart.

  5. I think uphold is to strengthen, encourage, even literally hold one up if they need to be held up. I think God upholds us every day with the fact we have air to breathe and our earth has not been destroyed.

  6. Uphold to me, means everything in my life might be spinning out of control, but, God will keep me held tightly in an upright position. A verse I cling to, Phillipians 4:13.

  7. The Lord is steadfast in His dealings with me. He never tires of my questions. He upholds me with His enduring love. He strengthens me with His JOY. His grace covers me. His promises enable me to stand..He upholds me with His strong right arm.

Who in all Heaven and earth can be all these things for me....but the ONE who died for me...that I might uphold the goodness and mercy of His great love...all the days of my life.

That I may dwell in the house of the Lord forever and ever ...upholding the richness of His Glory ....as a daughter of the MOST HIGH KING. His mercies are new every morning. When I am in the valley...He upholds me there. Or on the edge of a cliff... His gentle whispers steady me and guide me to solid safe ground.

He is my strong tower...my One true thing...my bright morning star...my flashlight in the darkness...Oh the many ways that He upholds me...day and night He gives me life. I would cease to be...if He weren't upholding me ...I simply cannot make it on my own....He created me to lean on HIM...I mess it up every time that I lean on me...

And so....His grace is all sufficient for me....I surrender to His everlasting arms....

    Oh to be HELD...
by my One and Only JESUS

  8. Blessings Sharon!

Uphold to me in its simplest way is to HOLD one UP ... Knowing God is sufficient and more than enough, that He holds me as I hold on to Him, gets me through ... He lifts me up; He gives me support and this is the way the Body of Christ should be "upholding" one another.

And there are 26 verses with the word UPHOLD in the NIV but the verse that holds me up is not on that list nor does it include uphold (like many have chosen the one that lifts them up)

    Psalm 41:12 (NIV)
Because of my integrity you uphold me and set me in your presence forever.

    1 Kings 8:45 (NIV)
then hear from heaven their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause.

    2 Chronicles 6:35 (NIV)

    Psalm 37:17 (NIV)
for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous.

    Psalm 63:8 (NIV)
I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.

    Psalm 82:3 (NIV)
Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.

    Psalm 145:14 (NIV)
The Lord upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.

    Lamentations 3:59 (NIV)
Lord, you have seen the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause!

    1 Kings 8:49 (NIV)

    Psalm 37:24 (NIV)
though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.

    Psalm 119:117 (NIV)
Uphold me, and I will be delivered; I will always have regard for your decrees.

    Psalm 140:12 (NIV)
I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy.

    Psalm 146:7 (NIV)
He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free,

    Isaiah 34:8 (NIV)

    Amos 5:10 (NIV)
There are those who hate the one who upholds justice in court and detest the one who tells the truth.

    Romans 3:31 (NIV)

    Deuteronomy 27:26 (NIV)

    Deuteronomy 32:51 (NIV)

    1 Samuel 24:15 (NIV)
May the Lord be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand.”

    2 Chronicles 6:39 (NIV)
then from heaven, your dwelling place, hear their prayer and their pleas, and uphold their cause. And forgive your people, who have sinned against you.

    *Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

    Isaiah 9:7 (NIV)

    Isaiah 42:1 (NIV)

    Micah 7:9 (NIV)
Because I have sinned against him, I will bear the Lord’s wrath, until he pleads my case and upholds my cause. He will bring me out into the light; I will see his righteousness.

    1 Kings 8:59 (NIV)

    2 Chronicles 9:8 (NIV)
Praise be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on his throne as king to rule for the Lord your God. Because of the love of your God for Israel and his desire to uphold them forever, he has made you king over them, to maintain justice and righteousness.”

Thankful to Our Lord Jesus who upholds me!

    1. Oh, sorry I did not share mine because truthfully there are many and I couldn't choose just one but immediately a song rose up inside of me that comes from Psalm 61:2 so I have to share that ... in lieu of a verse;

"When my heart is overwhelmed ... draw near to me Lord
Lead me to the Rock, the Rock that's higher
Lead me to the Rock, that's higher than I
..." (I was going to link to the song but the ones that came up were not the one I know, although I liked them, I think they are newer and this is an older one, like I)

Yep, Sharon; that Rock like your previous slip and slide story. Hold on!

Love and hugs to uphold you through the winter-stay warm up there in those heights,
      Peggy

    2. In my quick search for the song I could not find above, I came upon a wonderful site with Scripture to music (which I love) and this playlist of the Psalms 120-134 (considered as the psalms of ascent)is definitely Psalms that UPHOLD and UPLIFT:

The person has so many playlists, I could listen all day, and there is also a website Scripture Songs for Worship

  10. What does the word uphold mean to you?

To me, it literally means to hold you up. I am reminded of the scene in Exodus - whenever Moses raised his hand, the Israelites were winning the battle. When he grew tired, his friends came and helped him hold up his hands. That is a picture of what I think the Holy Spirit does for me. He holds me up so I can keep *winning* in God's strength.

In what ways does God personally uphold you?

I am often buoyed up by His Word. There are so many times when a verse or a passage of Scripture tangibly boosts me up, encourages me, gives new strength to my weary spirit. I am also upheld by His Presence, whether I sense it all the time or not. And, of course, I am upheld by the confident hope in my future home with Him for all eternity.

What is one verse that serves to uphold you with God's Truth?

"But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31, NLT)

    ENOUGH. SAID.

    AMEN!!

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)
