"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Promise

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: promise

What is a promise?

Have you ever had someone break a promise to you?  How did you feel?

How can we know that a promise made by God will come true?

What is the one promise of God's that means the most to you?  Why?

Let me know what you think!!

"His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire."  (2 Peter 1:3-4, ESV)

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

  1. I think a promise is a binding agreement and is based completely on the integrity of the one making the promise. I guess that's why a promise from God is the only promise you can truly trust. The rest of us are prone to failure, even when we try our best. I've had promises broken, and I'm sure (very sure) I have broken some too.

I really and truly love God's promises. I guess my favorite one is the promise of eternal life.
Here on earth, I love that he promised never leave me or forsake me. I also love that he has promised not to change like shifting shadows. In this constantly changing world with its incredible morphing morality, I love that what He said before, He still says today.

I can't imagine how sad it must be to choose a god without the integrity of my God.

  3. Debbie and I are on the same page this morning... those are my favorites too, and 'Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever'. There is no time limit to all he has promised, and he never changes. Thanks for the reminder this morning...

  4. For me a promise is a confirmation of that which is to come but as Debbie a promise is only as good as the integrity of the one making the promise. We humans are bond to break promises from time to time but I'm grateful that God is one we can depend on to keep His word.

  5. Have to also agree with Debbie here. It's about integrity and with our Father we have nothing to worry about there!

  7. What is a promise?

A promise is something you commit yourself to doing, no matter what.

Have you ever had someone break a promise to you? How did you feel?

Yes, I have. And I felt betrayed, disappointed, sad, and angry. It hurts when you trust someone to do what they say, and then they fail to fulfill that commitment. Unfortunately, I have also broken promises. Oftentimes, I haven't thought about what the other person might be feeling - until too late. We ought not make promises we can't keep.

How can we know that a promise made by God will come true?

Because He is God! The Bible tells us that He is incapable of lying because of His perfect and unchanging character. Therefore, He is the only One whose word can always be trusted, because He is the only One who is completely trustworthy. Also, He has a great track record!!

What is the one promise of God's that means the most to you? Why?

His promise that He will never leave me nor forsake me. That means the most to me because it is true in every single moment, every single situation that happens in my life. No matter what I feel or face or fear, HE IS THERE! It's also my favorite promise because it's a promise that will *outlive* this life. Not only will God be with me on earth, He will be with me in eternity!

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)
