Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.
This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)
Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!
Today's word: humble
What do you think it means to be humble?
What is the difference between being humble and having low self-esteem?
In what area of your life is it hard to be humble?
Why is it impossible to be a disciple of God without being humble?
Let me know what you think!!
"But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble." (James 4:6, NLT)
"For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." (Matthew 23:12, NIV)
"So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor." (1 Peter 5:6, NLT)
"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

This week we're thinking along the same lines Sharon. I would say humility is about have a proper perspective of one's self--neither too lofty nor too low. I believe it also has to do with not seeking to place oneself desires, needs or wants before others.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh Sharon - we are having such a hard time with one of Andy's teacher at a Christian school. I can;t go into it all - but gosh - she is the most ridged person I have ever met. I pray for him to become humble. sandie
ReplyDeleteSuch great questions, Sharon!
ReplyDeleteTo me, humility is the acknowledgement that all that I have, am and will be, all that I will ever do and have done, comes from Jesus!! It is gratitude and a characteristic that Jesus wants us to have and know! Tough one!
Love you!!
What do you think it means to be humble?
ReplyDeleteIt means to not think too highly of yourself. To not be proud or snobby or act superior.
What is the difference between being humble and having low self-esteem?
Being humble is placing ourselves in proper perspective as related to God. I think low self-esteem is actually a sort of *reverse pride* - just like being egotistical, it makes a person focus on themselves.
In what area of your life is it hard to be humble?
It is hard for me to be humble when I worry - my worrying implies that I think I am capable of controlling life. That is a role that I was never meant to have.
Why is it impossible to be a disciple of God without being humble?
Because we must always be humble enough to place God first in our lives. And, the Bible tells us that God actually opposes the proud. We cannot follow Jesus without humility - just as He demonstrated humility in how He followed His Father.
GOD BLESS!
Totally agree with you my friend.
ReplyDeleteWow, Sharon. I came here because I had forgotten to take time to Fan the Flame on Friday. (Yeah, I did it again. Floated off out of blogland...) I love your answer, and I really love the part about worry. I had never looked at it from that perspective.
ReplyDeleteNow, to go read the newest post.
God gives grace to the humble. I want to be humble. Somehow, humble happens when we aren't looking. And I guess that is because when our focus is on ourselves, we lose sight of Him who shows us true humility by his willingness to give up everything for us and to fulfill God's plan. Good thoughts to ponder.
