"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Wisdom

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: wisdom

How would you define the word wisdom?

Do you think there's a difference between intelligence and wisdom?  If yes, what is it?

Is wisdom a gift or can it be learned?

What is one piece of wisdom you would like to pass on to someone else?

Let me know what you think!!

"And this is what he says to all humanity: 'The fear of the Lord is true wisdom; to forsake evil is real understanding.'"  (Job 28:28, NLT)

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise."
(Psalm 111:10, NIV)

"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."  (James 1:5, NIV)

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

  1. I would say wisdom is not showing know what to do or say but knowing the proper time to do so.

  4. I feel wisdom can be learned. Here is some wisdom I would like to share- To get through the pain, you must go through the pain.

  5. I think it's both. Some are naturally born wise people. Other, like Solomon, ask God for wisdom. But it can be learned also with a determined heart, willing to study the Word. I have a friend who said her father was lazy. When God saved him he asked him to take away his laziness and give him a good work ethic. And God did! Sometimes I think we don't ask God enough.

  6. If I had gotten here on Friday, I would have been amazed at the providence of that word. I have started a unit on Proverbs for the summer (possibly my swan song), and we began with a deep down study of wisdom. I really wanted to get my head around it.

I was going to do a blog post about it on Sunday but things are not working around here.

I'll just say this much. Solomon, the wisest King of Israel, didn't get that wisdom just because he asked. It didn't appear magically. He got it because he asked God for "listening heart". Without a heart that listens to the Word of God, we will never, ever be wise.

  7. How would you define the word wisdom?

Wisdom is having knowledge and knowing how and when to use it. It is knowledge coupled with discernment.

Do you think there's a difference between intelligence and wisdom? If yes, what is it?

Yes, I think knowledge has to do with knowing facts. Wisdom is knowing what to do with those facts. Wisdom also involves thoughts and feelings. It is the spiritual application of knowledge.

Is wisdom a gift or can it be learned?

This was an interesting question. I think it's both. As far as spiritual wisdom, I believe that we can seek wisdom through Bible study and prayer. And, as we seek God's wisdom, and as we ask for it - He promises that it will be given to us.

What is one piece of wisdom you would like to pass on to someone else?

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. (Actually, I continue to learn that one myself!!)

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)

Thanks for your comments - it is such a joy to be sharing my journey with friends like YOU!
