HERE A COMMENT, THERE A COMMENT...

...everywhere a comment, comment.

Old McSharon had a blog...E, I, E, I, O.

Oh dear.

Yup, today I'm going to do something a little different.

But first, a little introduction.

Every now and then I take some time and ponder the whole cyberworld that is Blog Land.  And I continue to be amazed that I am part of it.

You see, my entry into blogging started rather inauspiciously.  In April of 2010, I attended a writer's conference with a friend of mine.  She encountered another woman from her church in the bathroom (which is a whole blog post in itself!), and this woman joined us for the day, and soon became a fast friend.

So, there were keynote speakers at this conference, but there were also "breakout sessions" on particular subjects.  In the afternoon, there was a session on blogging.  Both of my friends were very eager to attend this one.  I told them that I had absolutely NO interest in blogging, so I was going to take a break.

When I rejoined my friends, they were super-hyped about the idea of blogging.  I, being the social media rebel that I am, had no intention of ever joining the new blogging craze that was rapidly sweeping the nation.

Uh, yeah.

Never say never unless you really enjoy a hearty meal of crow!

I'm not exactly sure how I arrived at my conclusion that I was going to give blogging a try.  I think the Holy Spirit had a little something to do with it!! But, two months later, at the end of June, I became an official blogger.

I did hate the sound of the word *blog* - as it sounded so cliche to me - "Hi, I'm Sharon.  I just love all things computer.  Like, it's so cool to like, talk to people on a screen.  So, like yeah, I have a blog.  So, what's your sign?"

So, that's when I came up with my rather catchy (if I may say so myself) tagline:

BLOG = "Blessedly Leaning On God!"

It's at the bottom of every post, and it also serves to remind me of why I'm out here in Blog Land at all. It's all about God.  Has to be, or it's for naught.

My story, His glory.

Now, I also happen to think that being a member of the Blog Land community comes with a certain set of responsibilities.

Sure, I'm like all of you - I LOVE COMMENTS!

They make me feel good.  There, I said it.  Comments make me feel like my writing is valid, that my thoughts are making a connection, that I just might have something to say, that the Lord is using my gifts, that I'm not alone.

But, the responsibility is this: I also feel that I am in Blog Land for the sake of others.  Therefore, I take very seriously the importance of reading and commenting on other peoples' blogs.  It's important to encourage others, and I feel strongly that this is a big part of what blogging is all about.

OK, so that was a big introduction.

But, I thought it was important to let you know how I feel about comments.

So, every now and then, something I say in a comment to someone else makes me think about my own words.  I love how the Holy Spirit does that with me - how sometimes words come out before I really think them, and then those very same words get me thinking!

That's why today I am doing something different.  I'm going to list some comments that I've made on other blogs in the last four years.  Hopefully something will strike a heartstring, and we can all ponder some more.

1.  "This is not the end of the story."

Not only is that incredibly comforting, it's also amazingly hopeful.  I heard this Truth in my heart, as if it was echoing down through the millennia from that dark and dismal Friday at Calvary.  Not the end, not by a longshot.  And because of that day, which was truly the beginning of our story, God is writing a new story that will never die.

One day we will be released into the final chapter that never ends – in which we all live happily ever after.  Truly.

2.  I think for me, as one who has always felt "not enough" and "unworthy", I had to finally understand this one thought.  In the whole scheme of redemption, I truly was not and never could be "worthy" of my salvation. Never.  However, God loved me.  And HE deemed me worthwhile - worth the cost of His Son on the cross.  I have found blessed release in letting go of the constant need to be worthy, and learned how to bask in the glow of being worth the Lord's eternal LOVE.

3.  "I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord...who summons you by name."

I love that verse - treasures to be found in darkness, the hidden riches only found in secret places.  I have taken that verse and applied it to my life when I am in a period of discouragement.  I am finding out that when I have nothing left to give, when I am burned out, when I am dry and despairing - that that is when God teaches me something about Himself so personal and intimate that I scarce can take it in.

I am learning who He is in ways I could not unless I was walking in the valley.

4.  I loved what you had to say about the Real Power Source - the Holy Spirit. How often I forget that I am not called to live the Christian life on my own. On my own, I'm a very faulty, fading flashlight.  But, with the Spirit's power, I can shine as bright as the SON!

5.  Yes, we are called to unity in the Body of Christ.  I am reminded of that phrase, "They will know we are Christians by our love."  As I ponder that, it occurs to me that our unity across cultures, languages, races, and any other earthly thing that might cause division, is a huge testimony of faith.  What else could account for such unity other than the resounding and unifying power of a Savior?!

May I strive to be a wall-breaker - and not waste my time on adding bricks.

6.  I found myself pondering that very weighty question that Jesus asked: "Do you want to get well?"  At first glance, it seems like the answer would be easy. Well, of course!  But, sometimes people get very comfortable in their *sickness* - sin can be quite familiar, and we can easily become complacent. Do we really want to be cured?  For sometimes, the cure can only come through pain.  Sometimes healing requires brokenness.  Sometimes getting well means we have to face our *sickness* straight on.

When we ponder this question, we do well to count the cost of discipleship before we answer.  If we say yes to Him, we will never be the same.

7.  God's plans are often much bigger than my dreams.

8.  After all, the appeal of Jesus is not that He makes us perfect, but that He makes us whole.

9.  I truly believe that our enemy speaks lies to us – he tempts us to be complacent when action is required, but he also makes us resist (or not, and then to feel guilty about it) when we need to rest.  Jesus Himself took time away on a regular basis.  I believe He understood the very human need to rest, restore, and revive.

10.  Tending to focus on the worries and troubles, I sometimes miss the miracles.

11.  I truly believe that the most insidious lie of the enemy, the one lie that began in the Garden, the one lie that ruined us was this:

"Is God really good?"

I am reminded of this exchange in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe – when Lucy asks Mr. Beaver about Aslan, the great and mighty lion of Narnia:

"Is he—quite safe?"

"Safe?" said Mr. Beaver. "Who said anything about safe?  'Course he isn't safe.  But he's good."

I am thrilled by a Savior who isn't tame, but whose goodness knows no end.

12.  You know, most of the time when I hear that word [perseverance], I think of trudging along in spite of circumstances - mostly with an exhausted spirit, and a disgruntled attitude.  However, I think you're right.  Perseverance is a process.  And rather than a destructive windstorm that serves only to erode us, it's more like a chisel in the hand of a master sculptor.  God uses our perseverance to work on our character.  And so, the longer we persevere, the more we'll look like Him.  That IS a lifelong process, but worth it for the joy that awaits.

13.  After all, much of God's will is all about making me like His Son. And that can happen anytime and anywhere because it happens in the heart. Even in a heart that is whining...

14.  The enemy doesn't just drop bombs on us, he also likes the incessant attack of darts.

15.  I know that I am not alone in this struggle.  This desire to be known. Part of it stems from God-given desires, a true wish to be used by the Lord for His purposes.  But most of it just gets filtered through self-pride and enemy lies. I know that David must have had MANY battles against his own flesh, and against the enemy of the Lord.  And yet, he continued to pursue God with all of his being, and God called him a man after His own heart.

So, above all the riff-raff that is me, I want God.  First.  Foremost. Forever.

16.  "Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope..."

Sometimes, when we're downcast, hope is a conscious choice, a willful re-focusing on the Truth of God's great love and tender mercies, a determination to remember His faithfulness.

17.  It isn't the *outside* things that proclaim what we believe. It is the inner transformation of the Spirit - and that is most reflected in how we love people - even our enemies.  For perhaps it is then, when it is most difficult to love, that we most resemble our Savior.

18.  Sometimes I wonder if the needy can see God more clearly.  I pray for His help in remembering the neediness inside of me.

19.  Hope is what makes our faith soar.

20.  Oh, how deep is that desire to be known completely, understood implicitly, and loved unconditionally.  And how the enemy perverts that God-given desire into a frantic striving to be known by other people - recognized and, perhaps, a bit famous?

I am asking God daily to help me be completely satisfied and content to be known by HIM, and to realize how much The Audience of One cheers for me.

That's all, folks.

I'm speechless...(finally!)

Leave good footprints...
...for we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses.

"Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say."
(Exodus 4:12, NIV)

"...do not worry about what to say or how to say it.  At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you." (Matthew 10:19-20, NIV)

"...for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what needs to be said."
(Luke 12:12, NLT)

"For I will give you words and wisdom..." (Luke 21:15, NIV)

"...and I will open your mouth among them. Then they will know that I am the LORD." (Ezekiel 29:21, NIV)

"I thank my God every time I remember you.  In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
(Philippians  1:3-6, NIV)

"So we have been greatly encouraged in the midst of our troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith.  It gives us new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord.  How we thank God for you!  Because of you we have great joy as we enter God’s presence." (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9, NIV)

Which thought struck you today and why?

(SIDENOTE:  I sincerely hope that no one thinks I'm touting myself by listing some of my comments.  Truth be told, I'm dry of ideas this week!!)

(IRONIC SIDENOTE:  And I do realize that I'm asking for comments about comments.  But, I always appreciate your thoughtful and thought-provoking input.  E, I, E, I, O!)

  1. I really enjoyed this post. Always love your comments on my blog, and I love you.

  2. Blessings Sharon ... before there are too many comments and they mess with what I want to say or I forget (I really hoped to be #1 but the #1 position is filled by the #1 sweet blogger and visitor of so many of us, and rightly so) somehow I brief interruption and I forgot my thought(s) ...so for the moment before someone gets theirs in here ... I just want to say:

I AM SO GLAD that YOU DID START BLOGGING in 2010 as I did a few years before under no encouragement of others, or conferences or even a church deal... I just started ...

... and before I say more about comments, I need to go back and review your wonderful, as always, insightful and spiritual points as you "blessedly leaned on God" because that is exactly what I get when I visit or you visit me (3 for 1 in my case) ... yet if you had not started, I would never have met you and what a great loss these last few years would have been for me without you and the other few loyal commenters at my place (which in part is my fault by not investing in visiting as much as I did at first to get to know others and what they blog about).
I'm kinda in a world of my own and often time does not permit to visit and comment as often as I'd like. However, personally, you know I often close comments ... and I'll spare you and the others for my reasoning. But it's definitely not because I do not value the wonderful input and thoughts that people write in comments ... (I guess spammers. spoiled this for me a little). But my biggest peeve or problem personally is if you get a comment, you owe that person one, and vice a versa, and when that did not happen ... it took the wind out of my sail,
discouraged me and I just don't have the time to invest in "memes" to connect and share (I prefer to avoid the hurt, I guess, kind self preservation)...

By now ...you can probably tell that I started my comment only after reading your intro (up to the BLOG) part ... so I perhaps went off on a tangent that you did not intend or is noted in the 20 points ... so I'll publish this and be back. (Especially if I am way off base on sharing my 'comments on comments'). You know I love yours!

BLOG, HOPE and HUG ... JOY my dearest blogger friend and sister,
    Peggy

    1. Now as I read your 20 chosen comments that you have made elsewhere in BLOGLAND ... let me reiterate and add how much your comments have blessed me and caused me to reflect further as all 20 of these do ... and I could not even pick a favorite (but #11 is close) and the ending photo with that profound caption ... YOUR comments are worth all the many I lack because each one stirs me and blesses me. Your feedback is genuine and thought provoking! always an encouragement or I can definitely tell that you read through my ramblings (which many times desires an applause and a commendation)! I truly believe that what connected us together in blogland, is reading your comment on someone else's blog drew me to click on your name and arrive at your blog to read what you pen because your comment was so profound or striking (little by little I became a regular) and the rest is HIS STORY and OURS ... I totally agree with you "blogging" requires responsibility to those who write, read and mutually visit. So I guess I wasn't totally off the wall by what I wrote at first. (I need to learn to briefly and concisely say in a comment what the writer spoke to me ... and so far, that does not look like it's happening)... You and your comments warm my heart often and I'm honored to blog along with you and share together as I glean so much from all you write. You are a gift and a gifted writer!

The ones that struck me ... were the ones on HOPE since ya' know that's what I'm looking for ... yet each one struck a cord or heartstring as I read (some I needed to go back and read again). I think your comments stand alone but it's be interesting to see what the blog post had to say or link to them to see what drew this connecting thought from you ... like I said that is how I found you by following your comment from another's blog. Often someone's comment touches you and you wanna connect.

Thanks Sharon for so many thought filled comments and spilling over into my life and my life journey on my blog(s) and in my life. I feel like we somehow know each other without ever having met but the words we've shared ... and I'm humbled and as I wrote honored that our paths crossed

  3. Hi Sharon! Isn't it amazing that your comments that bless others comes around to bless you again? And now us. God is really good!! It must be very interesting for you to go back over these comments...do you relive the emotions you felt when you wrote them?
You are a very insightful commenter, and I always like to see your name pop up on my blog. Thank you for your faithful friendship between our blogs, and the great thoughts you have shared.
    Blessings!

  4. Sharon...let me first say that I for one, am SO glad that you decide to start your blog! I am blessed every time I read your posts and even more so by the comments you have left on mine. I felt the same way you did about blogging in the beginning...that most blogs were all about home decor, cooking and crafting, etc. That is until I found out that there was a whole network of godly women who's sole purpose was to uplift and encourage. And you do just that, my friend...God Bless you!

  5. " After all, the appeal of Jesus is not that He makes us perfect, but that He makes us whole"
    Yes! Yes, this.
And I too did an entire post of comments once, but they were comments left for me instead of comments left by me.

  7. I'm amazed, Sharon, you kept track of these comments made on other's blogs! They were all great and inspiring and actually have to be pondered over for a minute, a lot of insight in them and wisdom by the Holy Spirit! I am glad you did start blogging and that your intent is to make sure God is always glorified as you do so! Loved the picture of the paw print in snow; we truly do have witnesses all around us indeed!

  9. I like your acronym for BLOG! I also like the wisdom. My you do have a great deal, and I agree, it comes from the time in the valley, not sneaking around what He controls anyway! I'm also with you on lifting up one another, you know, the older I get the more I'm beginning to get, "Tis better to give than receive." Blessings to you, Sharon. Thanks for the reminder of our calling, sister.

  11. Good Morning, Your post stirred me and I pray for my Blog I pray for those who read it. I pray for those who have a blog and desire to glorify Him in their words!
Feeling unworthy is rampant and when we can love someone through a comment and read what they wrote is pure and simple validating at it's finest! I have been writing a post on commenting and one day release it! I am so happy to have found your blog and this safe place of grace! Blessings to you and all He has called you to share and be all He has for you in this season! You Go Girl...
Loved This..... A Big Hug to you because I am a huger! In Christ Roxy

  12. What struck me was the line about leaving good footprints. That's a cute way of seeing comments. I've always been blessed by yours. My favorite comment of yours was when I attended the Joyce Meyer Conference in Long Beach a few years back with my daughter. You expressed how we traveled down the coast and close to where you lived at that time and wished we could have met up. Oh, how I wished I could have been on top of it back then and remembered your location. Would love to meet you in person some day! Your friendship blesses me.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I too started blogging in 2010, because I was angry! I thought I had stories to tell, and that no one wanted to listen. My daughter suggested a blog to keep a record and tell the stories. I try to give comments when I read a post, but there are only a few who without fail, leave me a comment. Sharon, you are one, and Floyd is the one who never fails. His words are always full of wisdom and encouragement as were your 20 carefully saved comments. Although comments make us happy, the greatest comment I desire to hear is from Jesus when He says, "Well done thou good and faithful servant." Thank you for sharing your wonderful post with us here at “Tell Me a Story.” At: http://letmetelluastory.blogspot.com/

  14. It seems we both started the trek into blogging haphazardly into blogging in 2010. I never would have thought I would have been doing anything like blogging but I do believe it was all do to the Holy Spirit prompting. I"m quite impressed that you manage to keep up with all the many great comments you have left at other blogs.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Blogging can be a messy business, but at the same time very worthwhile. It seems you have found a way to *listen* in the midst of all the self-promotion and networking. And that, I think, is the key.

    Keep listening, friend.

Thank you for linking with us at Unforced Rhythms.

  17. I think you are blessed with an incredible gift of insight.
#14. Is my very favorite of all. It may not be as long, and it may not seem to have the insight, but this dart board thinks it is spot on.

I also have other reactions to this post, but I will ponder them, pray, and keep my thoughts to myself.

  18. The hidden treasures made my heart leap and I had to re-read that! I shall be heading to bed soon meditating on it. Something ancient and wonderful to ponder - as old as our calling in Christ before the foundation of the world.

Truth be told, my dear, YOU are a treasure! I always need my weekly Sharon fix, sharing God. Such a clever thought to share your comments to others - your well wasn't that dry! But, what a lot of work to round up all those comments - or do you copy and paste them into a document to save them when you sense the Lord actually doing the commenting through your obedient fingers?

So blessed you ventured into Blogland - so we would one day meet. May need to wait for eternity to sit down to tea together - but taking joy in knowing someday that day will come to pass!

    Joy!
    Kathy

  19. It's been interesting how the Lord has called some of us into blogging...which I hadn't planned, either... and now people around the world sometimes see or read and certain types of seeds are planted in them. It's a new ministry. I'm a writer on the side and have been for years and sharing stories and plays, etc., at churches, but now the blogging is one of my main God-jobs. Our world is opening and I hope we can reach out and about and touch the ones who need the Lord. Or need piles of encouragement! Thanks.

  20. Somehow this post reminded me of a verse in a song by Keith and Kristen Getty called "By Faith":

"By faith we see the hand of God in the light of creation's grand design, in the lives of those who prove His faithfulness, who walk by faith and not by sight."

His words unite us, his children, in this otherwise hostile Cyberia (for make no mistake, the internet is not neutral), and encourage one another to encourage one another. Keep writing - we'll keep reading :)

  21. Hi Sharon. I too am encouraged by the comments I receive. I always rejoice when I hear that someone said "they needed to hear what I said." I always enjoy my visits to your blog. I love your writing style and encouraged by what you write.

  22. Hi Sharon! I enjoyed reading this post on comments. Isn't it funny how the things we say we will never do, we end up doing? God's funny like that, huh? :)

  23. I really enjoyed this. Number 6 especially hit home for me. We certainly can get comfortable in our sickness/sin and not be willing to suffer the pain that brings about healing.

  24. I just love how God works! I love how the very thing you did not want to do, here you are doing. And I'm so glad you are. Love your acronym for blog. That is AWESOME and I'm feeling bad I never caught on to that as now I see it there. :) I can say I have been truly blessed by the comments you leave on my posts. When I see you come by I smile big. Love your heart, friend.

  25. Oh, my goodness! I LOVE your B.L.O.G. acronym!!! I find the word "blog" a bit odd as well. Like you I drug my feet, but God has done great things for me and our marriage through it so far. If other women and wives are encouraged through it, that's all His doing, none of my own. I'm basically tech illiterate, so it's a small miracle to even get a post written! lol God is so good! Blog= Blessedly Leaning On God I shall never think of it the same again! Thank you! Have a beautiful day, dear sister in Christ!

  28. I started blogging under a pseudonym in 2005. Last December, I left that blog and opened my new one, under my real name. Part of my reasoning was that community of which you speak. I was known by my pseudonym, and as I shared more and more over the years, and the relationships became more real, I hated "hiding" behind a false name. When I comment, I want people to know it's ME. When I ask for prayer, I want to know that my friends KNOW who they're praying for. :-)

  29. I love the commenting and interaction that there is in blogging, but as in everything, we can't do it all. We just have to be sensitive and do the best we can to be an encouragement! I'm right by you at Lyli's again this week. :)

  32. Hi Sharon~You are a faithful commenter who has blessed many people's lives. I am so grateful for your friendship, your comments, your insight that comes from listening to the Lord before you write. The Scriptures about the Holy Spirit putting the words in our mouths probably blessed me the most as I sweat over every word I write! Hopefully, I'll relax a little more and write more often.
Next to the Scripture, the comment that hit me the most was your repetition of Jesus' question: "Do you want to be healed?" Just like you said, my first reaction would be, "Of course." But if it means confronting my brokenness, my negative thoughts, and truly changing, I just might hesitate. That all hurts too much. But staying where I am hurts too much as well. Much to think about here, Sharon. So grateful for you~

  36. Ah...a text box, yay! Am sharing your blog with my sister in Louisiana as we speak. The cockroach is a formidable creature and probably demonic so you are right to be afraid. My family lived in a house in downtown San Diego when I was younger and they were everywhere down there...had to sleep with the lights on. I get the heeby-jeebys just thinking of it! Anyway, your Mom IS amazing and so are you for tackling such a beast, even if it was only to hold the cardboard.

I hope you both had a wonderful Mothers Day and thank you for your wise words that help us all to better understand heroism, the awesome privilege of being a vessel of the Holy Spirit, and how He guides us through trials (like crazy cockroach battles ) to strengthen and hone our courage. Love you AND your Mom!
