A POEM FOR MOM

Mother's Day is this coming Sunday.

I am so glad that my mother is still alive, and this year I am more grateful for her presence in my life than ever before - still my mom, still my friend.

To honor her, and the blessed calling of motherhood, I am sharing a poem I wrote several years ago.

Hope you enjoy it!

A MOTHER

She carries you for nine months,
Then cares for you
Forever...
She watches out for you
when you are young,
Then watches over you
for a lifetime...
She holds you closely in her arms
for a while,
Then tightly in her heart
Always...
She is there through every change,
Then never changes
herself...
She teaches you about life,
Then lets you leave home...
and live -

A mother is
every gift of God
wrapped up in one person -
Joy, Peace
Patience, Kindness, Goodness
Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-control
And most of all...
Love.

Though I am no longer a child,
I will always be
My mother's child
And that is comfort personified -

My mother is
A safe place to be
A soft place to fall
A refuge in every storm...
She calms the winds of life
And helps smooth
the paths
I have chosen to walk.

I have never questioned
Her love
or her faithfulness,
My faith in her
has never faltered...
She is the sun
that rises every morning,
And the promise
of a new day.

She is
The keeper of secrets,
The spark
to my dreams,
The footsteps
that walk beside me -
She is the one
on the sidelines
who whispers quietly,
with hands
folded in prayer
and
tears in her eyes,
"Go...go...go,
I'm here."

She is
The quiet heartbeat
that keeps time
with my own...

My mother is
My best friend,
The beacon
of my life...

My mother is home...

I LOVE YOU, MOM!!

What's a favorite memory or moment of yours with your mother?

Her children rise up
and call her
blessed.

Thank you, Mom, for leading me to Jesus when I was young.

"Listen, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone.  And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today.  Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.  Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.  Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates." (Deuteronomy 6:4-9, NLT)

And thank you, Mom, for always showing me how to follow Him.

"Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it." (Proverbs 22:6, NLT)

  1. Such a pretty picture of your mom, Sharon; and such a beautiful poem!! At church yesterday the pastor said the best thing we could teach our children is about Jesus; seems like your mom did great in that for her children! I know I didn't get a lot right with parenting, but I got that one right in teaching Jesus to our 2 kids.

I liked the stories my mom would share of her growing up years or young adult years :)

  2. Hi Sharon! How fun to see a photo of your mother! She has such a beautiful smile :)
My mom died in 2010, but what she left all of us was a great love for holidays and for getting together with family. She also encouraged all of us to do something, volunteer, give back. She was a special lady.
    Have a great week!

  4. Oh Sharon, Your beautiful poem is such a wonderful tribute to all mothers, especially yours and you, yourself ... love the photo of your precious mom and so many of the images that your poem brings forth captured in her, her smile and her warm spirit and heart that lives on in you and yours and theirs ... ahhh. My mom's been gone way too long (sigh) and as you know 'mother's day' is ever so hard for me so I don't linger there but I'm so glad your mom is still with you to enjoy as friend, mentor and mom as she has you and your siblings to hold her up now because she depends on you as you once did her. Hold on. And enjoy a blessed Mother's Day! ~ Love, Peggy ~ {quickly from a cyber with no time to check typos or write on your significant grateful thoughts that always speak to me just like your B.L.O.G. and comments on mine. Thank you. God bless.}

  5. Sharon, this is so beautiful...bringing tears right to the surface. Each word you shared here, I could say for my precious Mama too. She was all of those fine things too.
And, now, I have a beautiful face to add along with my prayers.

  6. I love it when elderly parents are still honored and considered a blessing instead of a curse. My mother is with Jesus (2004) and I will be visiting my dad in a PA in a couple weeks. He is in a nursing home. Will he remember me? I don't know. Thanks Sharon.

  8. It does feel funny to not wonder what am I going to get my mother for mothers day. I would send her flowers for she had no needs of clothing, shoes or jewelry. In fact she would get upset if I sent her those things. What she did want was to get out of the nursing home ...so this Mothers Day she has got the perfect gift. April 9the she took a trip on the good old gospel ship and stepped onto heavens shores greeted by those who went before her, her mom and dad who she talked about so much in her last months. Just today I was shopping for myself and without even realizing it I was looking for something to get her. It does feel strange her not being here to receive gifts. Beautiful tribute for mother.

  12. That's beautiful, Sharon! And I love how she is gesturing you to rise up--just in case you forget. I'm grateful that my mom is still here, and healthy too. I love the line in your poem that says, "My faith in her has never faltered." That really hit me because through everything in our lives, even the stupid mistakes she made, and the stupider ones I made, she was always just my mom. I never hated her, thought less of her, or judged her. Thanks for sharing that Sharon.

  31. I loved that first paragraph, so powerful. I'm the early stages, holding my babies when they cry and snuggling them to sleep. Although I seriously only average 3.5 hrs sleep a night, for a year and a half, I know I will miss it!
