"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Still

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: still

What does it mean to be still?

Why do you think it's so difficult to be still?

What are some of the benefits of being still before God?

What does this verse mean to you?  "Be still and know that I am God."

Let me know what you think!!

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

  1. Hi Sharon,

Guess my first thought would be stop worrying, be still and trust me.

    Have a good weekend.

  2. I have had to rely on that Scripture - Be still and know that I am God - many times over the years. To me it has meant...stop running around (not physically, but in my mind) trying to figure things out. God's got it.

  4. To be still means to stop. Like the drivers manuel says to do at rail road crossings...Stop.Look.Listen. When we are racing around whether in our minds or physically...we hear ourselves, confuse ourselves...we need to stop, physically and mentally. Look for God and listen for Him to speak to us. It means to quit striving. I think we are afraid to stop, because we think nothing will get done without doing it ourself. But we miss the seeing the power of God working. Benefits of being still - increases our peace, gives us rest, it allows us to see and hear Him. Be still and KNOW that I am GOD - means Believe me Julie...I got ya, so stop, read my word, trust my promises...I AM GOD. Nothing is too hard for me.
    Thanks Sharon.
    Happy Weekend.
    Julie

  6. These verse keeps showing up in my quiet time in the last few weeks. I even wrote this down in my journal how God was using it and having me dwell on it. The same day I found a paper in my Bible that I had wrote this verse Ps. 37:7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him." I always love it when I realize how God's word is so personal to us.

  7. What does it mean to be still?

To me, being still means being quiet - inside and out. To cease activity, to remove myself from mental distractions and emotional turmoil. To settle my spirit, and to prepare myself to listen.

Why do you think it's so difficult to be still?

The world makes it very hard to be still. As technology increases our ability to have an *instantaneous* life, I think it becomes harder and harder to separate ourselves from a fast pace of living. And, I know that Satan desires us to be busy, distracted, frantic, and anxious - anything to keep us from listening to the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit.

What are some of the benefits of being still before God?

We are given the unique privilege of coming into the presence of God. The unparalleled comfort of approaching the throne boldly. There we are counseled, comforted, and encouraged. We are taught new revelation from God's Word. And we anchor ourselves to the things of eternity - by letting go of the things of this world when we are still.

What does this verse mean to you? "Be still and know that I am God."

I find two things in this verse. One is a command, and one is a promise.

First, I hear the command - God telling me, "Be still. Know that I am God." He is telling me that I am not the one in control. And I am only fooling myself with my ceaseless and senseless striving busyness. Therefore, He commands me to be still and align myself with the One who sits on the throne!

Secondly, I hear the promise - God telling me, "IF you will be still, you will know that I am God." He is telling me that in stillness I will find Him. In stillness, He will enter into intimate fellowship with me, and I will know Him personally.

    Awesome!

Loved your thoughts - may you find a corner in your life this week to *be still* - God's waiting to meet you there!

    GOD BLESS!

  8. I didn't realize you had fanned the flame. I'm out of it right now.

I didn't read the rest of the replies. I'm just saying "stop striving " and know that I AM.

  9. Being still is not always an easy thing to do. My mind races on to something I want to do or should do. Thank you for the reminder for me to practice being still.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)
