"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Deliverance

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: deliverance

What is deliverance?

Do you think deliverance is different from rescue?  If yes, how so?

What is the biggest deliverance God has made happen in your life?

Let me know what you think!!

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

  1. The difference in my mind between rescue and deliverance has to to with the end point. I see rescue as being taken away from something or brought to safety. The visual image is that of a fireman leading or even carrying a person out of a burning building to the safety outside.

Deliverance, on the other hand, implies not only a rescue FROM but a delivering TO. The visual image is that of not just being saved from the fire but taken to the hospital or (even better) safely home.

I think there are a lot of folks out there who settle for a salvation that is a rescue from the fire. True salvation, IMO, is when you realize that you weren't delivered from something but TO something. It isn't a safety net, it's so much better.

    I don't fear Hell.
I look forward to eternity in my Father's House. My salvation is the vehicle of that deliverance.

  2. Of course our greatest deliverance is from sin. And I am forever grateful for God's mercy in that regard.

More recently, in a much lesser vein, we were "delivered" from life in the city (which is great for many people, I realize) and allowed to find a peaceful place in the country, which feeds my heart and soul everyday. Have a wonderful weekend.

  3. Deliverance is being taken out of one negative state and into a positive one. God delivered me out of the snares of the devil and placed me on the road to complete salvation and heaven.

  5. To be rescued is to take self out of the picture and deliverance is putting Jesus in. He is our deliverance for all eternity.

  6. Deliverance is a great word. I feel like God has delivered me many times. There have been situations where it seemed there was no hope, but He made it all OK and the outcome was better than I could have imagined. Yes, I like that word deliverance.

  7. Mediocrity. I believe living for Jesus delivers us from average and boring and set us on an exciting path.

  8. Hi Sharon,

My mind is too muddled and tired to answer your question at the moment. However I am sure God has delivered and will deliver me from many things and to Him must I look and Trust and Obey.

Hope you are settling in better and feeling less stressed. Hope too you will soon have an internet connection and we will see you on here again.

    God Bless - Nita

  9. Hi Sharon,

I see similarities in the words deliverance and the word rescue. When God delivers you from something like a bad habit or sin in general, he sets you free. You are set free, never to return to it. So in a sense, God rescues you. He rescues you from sin. God has delivered me from sin and the life I lived before receiving Christ. Halleluja!

    Blessings,
    Judy

  10. Interesting comparison. I have to give it some thought.
I tend to think of "delilverance" as more of a spiritual thing, and "rescue" as more of a physical circumstance.

  11. Is it any wonder that I love the responses I get on "Fan the Flame" Friday?! I just love hearing what your minds think - it gives me such depth of meaning, and much to contemplate!

    Here are my thoughts:

    What is deliverance?

Deliverance is the freeing from a circumstance or situation, a sin or suffering, that is out of our control.

Do you think deliverance is different from rescue? If yes, how so?

I loved all your answers on this one. Yes, I think that deliverance is different. I tend to think of rescue as something that needs to happen or we might just lose our lives. Deliverance is something that needs to happen or we might just lose our souls. I can be rescued from a raging flood or a desperate fall off a cliff. But deliverance is when I am freed from the raging flood of temptation or a desperate fall into sin.

What is the biggest deliverance God has made happen in your life?

The biggest deliverance happened to me in my 40's - God graciously delivered me from a relationship that had taken me far from Him. Yes, He delivered me from the sin that had captured me.

Deliverance sets the prisoners free, it unlooses their chains, and it also binds their wounds afterwards.

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)
