"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Yield

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: yield

What does the word yield mean to you?

When we yield to someone, does it require giving something up?  Explain.

Why is it so hard to yield to God?  What things make it difficult for you?

What are the benefits if we yield our lives to God?

Let me know what you think!!

"Know you not, that to whom you yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants you are to whom you obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?"  (Romans 6:16, KJV 2000 Bible)

"Yield now and be at peace with Him; Thereby good will come to you."
(Job 22:21, NASB)

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

  1. Yielding to God is not hard, unless we make it that way. I do not feel as if we must give up anything to yield to God. Yielding to God can make our life so much easier.

  2. Hi Sharon,
I used to ride horses, so to me, the word 'yeild' reminds me of pulling on the horse's reins in order to slow or stop...It means using restraint...But when it comes to the flesh, we sometimes need this restraint in order to move in a different direction according to God's plan for us....It also means allowing someone else to go ahead of us...Jesus will walk ahead of us, he has always "gone to prepare" for us...First in his ministry on earth, and then on the cross, and now in heaven where he is preparing a place for us. If we try to run ahead of Jesus in our life, we will surely miss out on God's best for us.
Thanks for making this old brain think today!

  3. Sharon,

For me, "Yield" simply means to stop what I'm doing, and get out of the way for God to work in my life. Too often we think once we ask God for help in our lives, we have to take up the slack if we don't think God's moving fast enough for us. Often times, I believe He's simply waiting for us to yield our efforts and let Him proceed. I'd much rather have God in front of me, rather than behind me any day!

  4. Thank you for your sweet comments about my story on prayer for one hour. Yes, it is the communication with God in our daily walk that is praying without ceasing. And I love your take on Yield. Surrender, give up and do as we know to do. Thy will be done as he is not a harst taskmaster!

  5. I always relate it do driving so for me, yielding means acknowledging that I don't have the "right of way". I love what the comment right above me said about getting out of the way for God to work in my life.

(Since I'm pretty much stalled, I guess I have taken "yielding" to a whole new level.)

  6. To me, to yield means I have to take myself and my desires out of the picture and allow God to do whatever He wants to do in and through me. Thanks for always making me stop and think, sweet Sharon.
    Hugs & Blessings~

  7. I think it's hard for us to yield to God at times because we lack the confidence that he'll do things in the manner in which we like.

  8. What does the word yield mean to you?

I think it means to surrender - not in a *give up* sort of way, but in a *give over* sort of way. To release my false sense of control to the Lord - the One and Only Sovereign God.

When we yield to someone, does it require giving something up? Explain.

Yes, in the case of God, it means giving up control. It means giving up trying to dictate events, or influence people, or steer circumstances. It means giving up selfishness, and self-centeredness. It means adopting Spirit-filled humility. Sometimes it means giving up worry and fear.

Why is it so hard to yield to God? What things make it difficult for you?

It's hard to yield to God because it goes against our nature - our natural, sinful nature. We have this prideful way of wanting to run and manage our own lives. What makes it difficult for me to yield? Worry, fear, and a certain sweet stubbornness. Ahem.

What are the benefits if we yield our lives to God?

God promises us abundant life, even in the midst of turmoil and suffering. He grants us HIS peace, HIS strength, HIS desires, and HIS purposes.

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)

Thanks for your comments - it is such a joy to be sharing my journey with friends like YOU!
