Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.
This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)
Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!
Today's word: need
What is the difference between need and want?
Is there a difference between having a need and being needy?
What do you need the most in your life?
Let me know what you think!!
(Note: Today's word and questions were provided by my husband, the guy with the broken ankle!)
"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

Need is something that is vital. Yes, I think there is a difference in being having a need and being needy. Actually heard a discussion about that very topic last night. My greatest need is to have more of the Father's presence in my life. As I get more of Him, the more my life is filled with everything else that I need.
ReplyDeleteI've really missed you since I've been MIA. Hope to be back to a routine soon. Hope you have a fantastic Friday.
Whoa, Nelly.
ReplyDeleteYou just opened a can of Debbie's Favorite Topic about which to harp.
And I do not mean in an angelic kind of way.
I believe with all of my heart that Satan has duped the world (especially the US) into believing that "wants" are "needs".
I believe that it is the single largest cultural malady of the day.
I am leaving on an adventure today so I don't have time for my usual novel. I will just say that I believe we have four basic needs.
Food
Shelter
Clothing
and salvation.
In an inverted order. The only real need that we have is salvation.
Okay what I NEED is not necessarily what HE thinks I need. Maybe I don;t really need it?

Such an interesting question.. when it comes down to it.. Do we really need anything other than Him?
ReplyDeleteHow is your husband and his broken ankle? Is he in much pain, Sharon? I hope not! Is he able to get around okay or does he need a lot of assistance in order to do so?
ReplyDeleteNeed-something that is a basic requirement for sustaining life.
Air, water, food, shelter, clothes and hope because I believe without hope it is hard to want to live. And hope can only come through Jesus, so I definitely need him.
There is a difference between needs and wants. Needs sustain, wants are what we think we really have to have, but we can pretty much get by without our wants.
God says he will provide all our needs, I'm looking at it these days not just physical, but also emotional, mental, spiritual as well.
I often tell people too that what I think I need is so different what God thinks I need. Aligning myself with what he wants to provide for my needs is always a challenge for me at least!
enjoy the weekend!

Yes, this past week, I've been telling the Lord a good bit of what I "need" - decidedly what I "want". In the end - all I really need is for the Lord to BE LORD. And, to that end, all my needs will be fulfilled.

Love ya!

Blessings Sharon,
ReplyDeleteI opened up to this yesterday and had nothing profound to share on NEED from a needy person (lol) in my past life... that is... Although today I still have not much to share (yeah, right?) and definitely nothing profound, I will just say that there is a definite difference between "need" and "want" though our society is indoctrinated with want, want and more want. I think we have basic needs in common, and the wants run a gamut from the simple to the outlandish. Basically, we could ideally say, all we need is Him... so the first need would be salvation... but many have not chosen that and they still share the other needs with us for food, shelter, water and being loved... but if they had Jesus and a relationship with Him, they would have the only need of love filled instead of searching and searching for finding it in others or material things.
I thought I had done a video on this verse but did not find one... so here's the verse that stands out of God's Promise Today and every day:
Delight thyself also in the LORD;
and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Psalm 37:4 KJV
So yes, there is a difference between need and desire (want)... and having a need and being needy... what I need most is the security in my life of Him for a future (and there's a promise for that in His Word also)! What I see as the difference is our need(s) are basic... our wants are selfish; we have good wants that come from God yet we allow them to overtake areas in our life. I am a Christian and yet I was needy... now I am no longer needy but have a constant need of the Holy Spirit changing me, refining me, making my needs and desires, HIS... and when they are given to HIM than my emotions and needs will be met in my desire to be more like Jesus!
Have a blessed and wonderful weekend and week...
thanks for keeping me in your prayers- Love,
Peggy
Hi again...me...I found something in my reading today to go with this:
ReplyDeleteLord, listen to my words. Understand my sadness. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, because I pray to you. Lord, every morning you hear my voice. Every morning, I tell you what I need, and I wait for your answer. Psalm 5:1-3

This is from the book we are studying over at Internet Cafe Devotions
It's always so interesting to read the *input* of everyone who comes and comments on Fridays. It seems that all of us are on the same page. Need and want are two different things - usually. And God is much more concerned with the things we NEED than the things we WANT.
ReplyDeleteNeedy (in the human realm) to me means clingy, cloying, smothering.
However, needy (in the spiritual realm) means being bereft of any means to help oneself. That *needy* leads to a deep-seated NEED for God's salvation. And then, as we begin to follow Him, He works in us to align our WANTS with HIS purposes.
So, all I really NEED is Him.
OK, and maybe, just maybe, a bit of chocolate from time to time (Sorry! Couldn't resist...)
GOD BLESS!
