"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Leadership

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: leadership

What do you think are the most important leadership skills and/or character traits?

Who do you think - (besides Jesus!) - embodies the true qualities of leadership?  Why?

Let me know what you think!!

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

  1. I think that just as being a good teacher requires that you are a good learner, being a good leader requires that you are a good follower.

The key is WHOM you follow.

If you follow the precepts of the world, you aren't a good leader. If you follow the whim of the crowd or want to be a people pleaser, you aren't a good leader. (I don't care which crowd it is you're trying to please. It's just as wrong to try to please the little guy as to please the big fish. Caligula was know to greatly please the common folks, after all.)

If you follow your own designs or your own person gain, you are the worst of all leaders.

Moses was a great leader. He listened to God and lead the people, even when the journey looked impossible. He pleaded and interceded for them, but he was willing to do the hard thing like letting the ground literally swallow evil doers if that's what God told him to do. It must have been gut wrenching for him at times. I love Moses.

From what I've read about the leadership of George Washington, he embodies the concept in our secular world. He could regularly be found praying. It wasn't about "him"; it was about something bigger.

I've already written too much so I'll stop.

This nation needs a leader like George Washington again.

  2. Jesus is the greatest, and best leader ever.

  3. A good leader, first and foremost, must have unquestionable integrity. He/she should be able to see potential in those that he/she leads and empower the followers to reach their potential. My pastor is a great leader, and he has the gift of wisdom and discernment. He also knows how to discipline without breaking a person's spirit. It is all done in the spirit of love, according to Biblical principles.

  4. some people try to control and manipulate those under them but the best are those who lead by example....and who understands the privilege and responsibility of their position of authority. Hope you have a Happy Mother's Day Sharon....I hope it's filled with lots of love.

  5. What do you think are the most important leadership skills and/or character traits?

As usual, your wonderful comments sum up much of what I think about the subject of leadership. I think we've touched on the idea of humility - that a true leader must not flaunt his position. He must think of others first. And also, they should be a person of integrity, honesty, and be able to stand firm when needed. I'm thinking of that curious and delicate balance of sensitivity, and yet being strong enough to make tough decisions. Courageous, intelligent, willing to learn also come to mind.

Who do you think - (besides Jesus!) - embodies the true qualities of leadership? Why?

I think good leaders "can" be people who follow the world's values - but great leaders must follow Jesus. (It's hard to think of anyone BESIDES Him when we think about leaders, huh?!) I suppose my favorite leader in the Bible would be David. For me he embodies the mix of humility and strength that is the benchmark of great leadership. He depended on God and yet, he was a man of action. I believe that a great leader makes mistakes, but is able to admit them and correct them.

A great leader knows that he isn't great on his own.

That's my *two-cent* answer for today!

    GOD BLESS!

  6. I think the very first thing is for a person to want to be a leader. There are different types of personalities. My husband is an "A" type, and he is a great leader. I'm a "B" type and I really don't feel comfortable in a role of leadership. As a preacher's wife I felt like people thought I should be a leader (at least some people). It was hard for me until I faced the fact that I didn't need to try to be something or someone I wasn't. This post made me put my "thinking cap" on. Thank you for sharing it.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte

  7. True humility, not puffing one's self up due to "title" of leader. Not putting yourself on a pedestal. Honestly, integrity and knowing in all things you are following Jesus Christ, if you are a Christian leader. Also much like Charlotte stated, having the gift of leadership. Sadly, I have not seen many true leaders that I think Jesus would say, "Well done" to. However, my father touched many, many hearts for his leadership in his life. Excellent question.

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)
