QUAINT WORDS

Welcome to "Quaint Words!”

These posts will contain thoughts, poems, and prayers from old books that I have found at antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales (with an occasional treasure from a bookstore).

I love the rhythm and sound of the older English language, and am blessed by other believers who have gone before me!

"It has been well said that 'earthly cares are a heavenly discipline;' but they are even something better than discipline - they are God's chariots, sent to take the soul to its high places of triumph.

They do not look like chariots...

They look like juggernaut cars of misery and wretchedness, which are only waiting to roll over us and crush us into the earth.

But could we see them as they really are, we should recognize them as chariots of triumph in which we may ride to those very heights of victory for which our souls have been longing and praying.

The Juggernaut car is the visible things; the chariot of God is the invisible...

This is the prayer we need to pray for ourselves and one another, 'Lord, open our eyes that we may see...'

...for the world all around us...is full of God's horses and chariots, waiting to carry us to places of glorious victory."

(From "The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life" by Hannah Whitall Smith, c. 1888)

  1. Hannah Whitall Smith's books was one of my favorites during my 20's and 30's. Her gentle, and grateful spirit never failed to encourage me.

She was also one of the earliest female Christian writers! :)
    Blessings to you ...Marsha

  3. I had a godly history teacher who always used to pronounce, "We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before." Thank God for the ones gone to glory who can still inspire us today. Thanks for sharing this on Spiritual Sunday. Blessings!

I feel like I have been run over this past six weeks and yet my spirit knows that it is all for my good...I need to just see it in terms like this piece says ..for the world all around us...is full of God's horses and chariots, waiting to carry us to places of glorious victory." Amen! I am going to enjoy the ride!!

  9. Hi Sharon,
This is one of my favorite books. I think I told you that already, though. Her journey is one of trusting God because He is worthy of our trust and faithful to care for us--no matter what the ride feels like.
Nothing can touch us that has not passed through His hand first--that's from her book. I don't think I wrote it word for word, so no quote marks.
Praying that you are secure in this storm that is attacking. Remember Jesus is in the boat with you!
    Blessings and Prayers,
    Janis

  10. Thanks, everyone, for your very encouraging words. Yes, I am also a great fan of Hannah. She has comforted me more than once. Didn't you just love the phrase "juggernaut car"? I was reminded of those old bumper car rides at amusement parks. Sometimes it does seem like life is just one big bumping into things, doesn't it?

Yet, we must not focus on the visible. It is the INVISIBLE ways of God that are reality. Therein lies the truth that we must depend on.

I'm choosing to look at the horses and chariots!

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)
