QUAINT WORDS

Welcome to "Quaint Words!”

These posts will contain thoughts, poems, and prayers from old books that I have found at antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales (with an occasional treasure from a bookstore).

I love the rhythm and sound of the older English language, and am blessed by other believers who have gone before me!

"Do not let any of these things [of the world] move you, for the rest that Jesus Christ has prepared for you is an ample recompense for all you may meet with here.

This rest is the fruit of the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ: O how will it fill our souls with love, to think that through the streams of this blood, we have overcome the violence of the world, and the snares of the devil.

My dear brethren, be not discouraged at the treatment you meet with here, but let it be a means to stir you up to advance in the love of the Lord who has prepared a rest for you."

(From "Daily Readings by George Whitefield" by George Whitefield, c. 1714-1770)

(Today is the memorial service for my aunt. I miss you a bunch, Auntie Phyllis - but I'll see you again! Rest in the love of the Lord.)

(A listing of books and authors, and also dates of individual postings from those books, will be found on my "QUAINT WORDS" page)

  1. Dear Sharon - I am so very sorry at the loss of your aunt - sounds that she was much loved by you. Praise God that we weep for a season, but spend eternity in unspeakable joy with those souls He has bound us to in our earthly lives. Yes, that is a rest much to be desired and sought after. Thinking of my mom, there, now.

Meantime - may you know rest from our weary day to day demands - seems things get heavier - or else we are all in a faith building season toughing out weight bearing exercises.

Joy in the climb, my firend . . .

  2. Absolutely beautiful words. Funny thing... Lately it seems that I am reading of the rest in Christ at every corner.

May you be comforted this morning, Sharon, and may your aunt have that rest we all long for.

  6. Kathy - Climbing with you. And making progress as we venture ever closer to our unspeakably joyful eternity with Christ!

Debbie - Yes, we are given rest in this life (peace that passes understanding) - and rest in the life to come. I think, actually I know, that my earthly rest depends heavily on how focused I am on that eternal rest. Hope brings a light yoke...

Mary - There are few things in life that are more comforting than the Word of God. I derive great meaning in them. My aunt believed every promise - and she is with the One she longed for.

Nita - Thanks, Nita. All is well. God is on His throne, and my aunt rests in His everlasting arms. I will see her again...

Wanda - I appreciate your sentiments. My sadness continues to be covered with joy. My aunt has come into the presence of our Lord. I mourn only for this short life...

BLESSINGS, one and all - GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)

Thanks for your comments - it is such a joy to be sharing my journey with friends like YOU!
