QUAINT WORDS

Welcome to "Quaint Words!”

These posts will contain thoughts, poems, and prayers from old books that I have found at antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales (with an occasional treasure from a bookstore).

I love the rhythm and sound of the older English language, and am blessed by other believers who have gone before me!

(A listing of books and authors, and also dates of individual postings from those books, will be found on my "QUAINT WORDS" page)

"To full obedience how large the blessing! The Lord enters into a league with his people, offensive and defensive. He will bless those who bless us, and curse those who curse us. God will go heart and soul with his people, and enter in deepest sympathy into their position. What a protection this affords us!

We need not concern ourselves about our adversaries, when we are assured that they have become adversaries of God...

In this sacred war we are allied with the eternal God, and if we carefully obey the law of our Lord Jesus, he is engaged to put forth all his power on our behalf. Wherefore we fear no man."

(From "Daily Readings by C.H. Spurgeon" by Charles Haddon Spurgeon, (1834-1892)

  1. I, too, love older English -- I fear what we are losing these days in the turn towards more and more social media!

Blessedly leaning on God...yes! I fear I don't do that nearly enough, pridefully leaning on myself too much.

  2. Hi Sharon,

I have long admired the writings of Spurgeon. It is sobering to realize that we are in fact, in a sacred war. A war, in which the enemy of God strives to capture our eternal lives.

The bible says, "If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)

We are assured that we have nothing to fear from the attacks of the enemy. We shall stand with Christ triumphantly.

    Blessings and peace.

  4. Melissa - Yes, I also fear what we're losing in the growing turn toward social media. We are quickly becoming used to instant (but often, in my opinion, meaningless) communication. The written word, from believers in the past (quaint words), and through the power of God's Word, is an invaluable treasure.

MTJ - It is so important to remember ALWAYS that we are not just skirmishing here and there. We are fighting a WAR. We have a real enemy. And, as you said, he is after our souls. Praise God that He has already won our victory. We need not fear. Just today I read in Revelation:
"I will never erase their names from the Book of Life. I will announce before my Father and his angels that they are mine!"
    THAT is standing triumphantly!

Sandie - Oh yes I do! He's big and strong - nothing better than leaning on the Rock!

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)

Thanks for your comments - it is such a joy to be sharing my journey with friends like YOU!
