QUAINT WORDS

Welcome to "Quaint Words!”

These posts will contain thoughts, poems, and prayers from old books that I have found at antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales (with an occasional treasure from a bookstore).

I love the rhythm and sound of the older English language, and am blessed by other believers who have gone before me!

"The true Christian is called to be a soldier and must behave as such from the day of his conversion to the day of his death. He is not meant to live a life of religious ease, indolence and security. He must never imagine for a moment that he can sleep and doze along the way to heaven, like one traveling in an easy carriage...

If the Bible is the rule of his faith and practice, he will find his course laid down very plainly in this matter. He must "fight."

With whom is the Christian soldier meant to fight?

...The principal fight of the Christian is with the world, the flesh and the devil. These are his never-dying foes. These are the three chief enemies against whom he must wage war. Unless he gets the victory over these three, all other victories are useless and vain.

...with a corrupted heart, a busy devil and an ensnaring world, he must either "fight" or be lost."

(From "Holiness" by J. C. Ryle, (1816-1900)

  1. What a confirming word for me this morning..I think God is calling my name very clearly...time to arise and re-enter the battle with His armor.

Thanks for the elbow this morning.

  5. Ah! That's it then! I am at war! World - check - just walk into my workplace! Flesh - check - just look into my filthy heart at my natural human response to all the rot I've been enduring this month! Devil - check - ain't he behind it all?

    But - GOD!

Yes . . . and that's all we need to know. The word would be GRACE - and I'm seeking to swim in it.
    Joy!

  6. This made me think of the song Onward Christian Soldiers. I loved singing this song when I was young. I still like it. We need to put on the whole armor of God. If there were no battles we would not need armor. Thank you for sharing this thought provoking post. I like your definition of BLOG.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)

Thanks for your comments - it is such a joy to be sharing my journey with friends like YOU!
