"FAN THE FLAME" AND A FOTO FRIDAY


"Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

"Fan the Flame" has been a feature on my blog for a long time.  I've enjoyed it, and have always loved reading your insightful comments.

So, this week I'm returning to "Fan the Flame" and asking all of you to *weigh in* on this week's word - HEART.

(Too easy???  Well, it IS Valentine's Day, after all...)

Today's word: heart

How would you define the concept of a person's *heart*?

Why is the condition of one's *heart* so crucial to the way we live our lives?

What are some ways the *heart* can be attacked, broken, lost, or hardened? And how can we guard against that?

What is the one thing that comes to your mind when you think about the *heart* of God?

"FAN THE FLAME" AND A FOTO FRIDAY


"Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

"Fan the Flame" has been a feature on my blog for a long time.  I've enjoyed it, and have always loved reading your insightful comments.  But I'm thinking about making a change.

However, in light of all the craziness of the past few weeks, I haven't been able to come up with a new and creative idea - (it's actually been hard to come up with much of anything!!)

So, this week I'm returning to "Fan the Flame" and asking all of you to *weigh in* on my Word for 2014 - JOY!

Today's word: joy

What does the word joy mean to you?

Why is joy so important in the Christian life?

How can we find joy in the middle of turmoil, suffering, and difficult circumstances?

What is one thing that has brought joy to your life this past week?

"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Grateful


"Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a question (or few)…just a little something to
"fan the flame" of your creativity!

And, to further fan those faith-filled flames (try saying that 10 times in a row!) – I'm adding my favorite devotional from the week!


Today's word: grateful

What does the word grateful mean to you?

Why is it so important to be grateful in our lives?

What are the good things in your life that you are grateful for?

How can we be grateful for the bad things in our lives?

What is the difference between being grateful for them, and enjoying them happening to us?


Ponder this (from one of my previous posts):


"Be thankful in ALL circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NLT)

ALL – a pesky word…

You know, on first reading, I was impressed with the fact that it is God's will for us to be thankful in all circumstances.  However, I read another possible meaning hidden in there.  We are to be thankful for all things BECAUSE those very things are God's will for us.

Nothing happens outside of His watch.  He is never surprised by anything that happens to us.  The good and the bad things are working toward His ultimate purposes.

How on earth can I find thanks for the bad things?

Because – it is these things that drive me to my knees.  It is these things that turn my face upward.  It is these things that make me understand…I am not in charge.  That is God's will for me.  To learn that He ordains every step of my way.  To learn that everything in my life arrives only after being filtered through His sovereignty and providence, through His love.  To learn that He is working out His purposes, through the good things and the bad.

To learn that I have nothing and no one else in life to depend on fully, except for Him.

And, at the end of the day, I'm so very grateful for that…

DEVOTIONAL OF THE WEEK:


When we pray for God's grace we should never forget to sing His praises as well.  He is our only hope, our strength and our shield.  Even while we are waiting for Him to deliver us from our present dilemmas, we can praise Him for His faithfulness to us in the past.  Then our faith and trust in the mercy of God will be strengthened.  God is merciful!  How often [has] God stepped in and acted on our behalf?  The might of God works in our favor when we call on Him in faith, and then we give thanks to Him in song.


*I praise You because You heard my cry for mercy.


"Praise be to the LORD, for he has heard my cry for mercy.  The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped.  My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song."

Today's word: refuge

What does the word refuge mean to you?

What do you need/want refuge from?

How does God provide refuge for you?

DEVOTIONAL OF THE WEEK:


God will protect you because He will answer your cries of distress; He is bending down, compassionate and interested in your prayer.  Believe in your heart that God will use His power to protect you.  When you look to God with expectation, you receive the protection you so desperately seek...God is willing and able to protect you faithfully.  He is the only One who can truly shield and protect you, so lay your cares at His feet.


*Protect me as the apple of Your eye - hide me in the shadow of Your wings.

Today's word: warfare

What does the word warfare mean to you?

What do you think is the toughest aspect of spiritual warfare?  Why?

How do you prepare yourself for warfare against the enemy?

What promises of God do you hold on to in the midst of spiritual warfare?

What a misconception many people have of the Christian life!  The average church member today does not seem to know anything about conflict...It is just at this point in today's Christianity that one may find its greatest defect. There is little or nothing of the soldier element in it.  The discipline, self-denial, spirit of hardship and determination so prominent in and belonging to the military life, are lacking.  Yet the Christian life is warfare.  We need to fight the good fight and endure hardships as good soldiers of Christ.


*Please strengthen me to endure hardships of many kinds.

Today's word: witness

What does the word witness mean to you?

How can we be a witness to unbelievers?

Do you think we can also be a witness to other believers?  If yes, in what ways?

What are the obstacles in your life that hamper your ability to be an effective witness?

If you had a chance to witness to someone about the Lord, what is the one aspect of His character that you would talk about?

God has many traits that make Him worthy of our praise and worship; His majesty; His glory; His mighty acts; His greatness; His goodness and His righteousness; His lovingkindness; His faithful love and His grace and compassion...We should tell every generation of God's mighty deeds and acts. Take a few minutes to consider the glory of God...Then make a point of telling someone else about the wonderful things that God has done for you.


*Help me to tell others of Your love and grace.

Today's word: struggle

What does the word struggle mean to you?

In what area(s) of your life do you struggle the most?  (Personal and/or faith)

What things have you learned in the middle of your struggle?  What have you learned after your struggle?

Do you think God honors us when we struggle?  If yes, how?

DEVOTIONAL OF THE WEEK:

(It's a long one - but oh so good!):

There are times when we are left alone to wrestle with God...At such times, God's Presence is painful but purposeful...It can be an intense, exhausting struggle, but eventually...we receive a blessing for having contended with God - and ourselves - face-to-face.  For your relationship with God to arrive at any depth, it has to include some of these wrestling matches...and it's sometimes a messy process...But it's a necessary one, and it leads to blessing...

Some see surrender as the purpose of Jacob's wrestling match with God - that Jacob had to come to the end of himself and submit to God's lordship...No, this wasn't about surrender; this was about contending with God and knowing His heart even in the intensity of a battle.  God honors spiritual intensity...Only the tenacious hold on to God in the midst of a wrestling match with Him and the relentless issues of life.  Hold on.  Go ahead and wrestle...[but] keep holding on anyway.  Stay in close contact with God, no matter how intense, and see into His heart.


*I won't let go until You bless me - I'll cling to You forever.

Today's word: pruning

What does the word pruning mean to you?

What makes spiritual pruning such a difficult process?

In what ways is God pruning you at this time in your faith journey?

What do you think He's trying to accomplish with His pruning?

The picture of a life-giving connection between a vine and its branches would sustain [the disciples] in the time to come...Jesus began his teaching on the vine and the branches by identifying the vine...The picture of remaining or abiding in the vine sets up the process of seasons of pruning...an ongoing process tended to by the Gardener...Submit yourself to God, the Gardener, for whatever pruning he sees fit.  But ask him to help you be aware of the work he is doing in your life, so that you may benefit fully from the "trimming," for your good and his glory.

"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Resist


"Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

Today's word: resist

What does the word resist mean to you?

What are some things you resist doing for other people and/or the Lord?

Why do you think we resist God's leading and His ways?

What are some very practical ways we can resist the enemy?

*(Even though the verses about putting on the armor of God are AWESOME, I want to know what that armor looks like - for YOU!!)

Jesus and the Father are united as one, and those who believe are united with them.  The Resurrection is confirmation of these things...Life is new...Few Christians feel Resurrection power coursing through them, but according to the Word, we are one with the risen Lord...[That means] we walk through trials and tribulations with an ability to overcome them.  Today's troubles are tomorrow's trophies for those who are filled with God's Presence.  Recognize the power at work in you and choose to live in it.


*Enable me to live my life in Resurrection power.

Today's word: servant

What does it mean to be a servant?

What are some of the ways a person can be a servant?

When was a time in your life when you were called to be a servant, but it was really hard to serve?

What are some of the rewards of being a servant?

Once again, Jesus teaches his disciples by doing something that dumbfounds them...On this night he demonstrates a humility that will only be exceeded when he goes to the cross...[The disciples] are still hoping for a Messiah to exalt...Jesus' demonstration of love and servanthood lives on as a reminder to believers...Service doesn't demean one's dignity; rather, as Jesus shows, it defines it.


*Teach me to be a servant when it's difficult to serve.

Today's word: rescue

How would you define the word rescue?

How did God rescue you, personally, from temptation or illness or fear or a desperate situation (or any other circumstance that occurred in your life)?

Take a moment and ponder what it really took for God to rescue us.  How might you show Him your gratitude today?

You are the apple of God's eye.  God will...answer your cries of distress; He is bending down, compassionate and interested in your prayer.  Believe in your heart that God will use His power to protect you.  When you look to God with expectation, you receive the protection you so desperately seek...God is willing and able to protect you faithfully.  He is the only One who can truly shield and protect you, so lay your cares at His feet.

Heart, soul, mind, and strength devoted to God will translate into a real, living love for our neighbors.

How would you define the word refuge?

What are the things in your life that you need refuge from?

How does the Lord provide refuge from the storms of life?

Even though we are encouraged to call on God throughout Scripture, the average person looks for human solutions first, rather than considering God's loving attention.  Over and over He promises His assistance and grace to those who call on Him in their time of need.  Regardless of what the crisis in your life may be, lay your problem before Him in trust...


*Give me your peace so that I can see things from Your perspective and make the right decisions.

Today's word: work

How would you define work?

(From the Parable of the Ten Virgins and the Parable of the Talents)

Whether this parable (the ten virgins) speaks to the Jews or to all people, it stands as an awesome reminder that a day will come for all when Jesus calls believers to eternity with him...Some like to believe that they have ample time to get their spiritual lives in order, but they risk being caught off guard...
In a similar vein, the parable of the talents teaches believers that God holds us responsible for the work he has given us until Jesus' return.  The kingdom of God is real, Jesus stresses.


*What is the work of preparation or kingdom building that God has given you to do?



"What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?...faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead...Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds...Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? A Prayer About EMPTINESS
When my soul is dry and empty

Heavenly Father,

     My heart feels empty.  I feel a loss of motivation, meaning, and purpose, and there seems no reason to go on...It's always some sort of loss that empties one's emotional tank.  My reserves are used up...and I have nothing left to give...Fill me with your love, truth, and goodness...You are the Living Water that can refresh me eternally.  I am waiting on you, Lord, to restore meaning, purpose, and satisfaction in my life.

What has broken your heart lately?

Today's word: sorrow

What does the word sorrow mean to you?

Do you think there's such a thing as *good* sorrow?  If you do, how would you define that, and what things might lead to that feeling?

How might God use sorrow for His purposes?

How does God comfort you in times of sorrow?


I found so many good verses about sorrow this week - (yes, I know that sounds like an oxymoron) - that I had to post them all.  Hope you find encouragement in them:


"My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word." (Psalm 119:28, NIV)

"Those who have been ransomed by the LORD will return.  They will enter Jerusalemc singing, crowned with everlasting joy.  Sorrow and mourning will disappear, and they will be filled with joy and gladness." (Psalm 51:11, NLT)

"'I will turn their mourning into joy. I will comfort them and exchange their sorrow for rejoicing.'" (Jeremiah 31:13, NLT)

"'So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.'" (John 16:22, ESV)

"'I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.'" (John 16:33, NLT)

What does the word content mean to you?

How might we learn to be more content with people, possessions, finances, circumstances, abilities - (fill in the blank)?


"Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong." (2 Corinthians 12:10, NASB)
