QUAINT WORDS

Welcome to "Quaint Words!”

These posts will contain thoughts, poems, and prayers from old books that I have found at antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales (with an occasional treasure from a bookstore).

I love the rhythm and sound of the older English language, and am blessed by other believers who have gone before me!

(A listing of books and authors, and also dates of individual postings from those books, will be found on my "QUAINT WORDS" page)

"It Is I; Be Not Afraid"

Tossed with rough winds, and faint with fear,
Above the tempest, soft and clear,
What still small accents greet mine ear?

" 'Tis I; be not afraid.

'Tis I, who led they steps aright;
'Tis I, who gave thy blind eyes sight;
'Tis I, thy Lord, thy Life, thy Light:

'Tis I; be not afraid.

These raging winds, this surging sea,
Bear not a breath of wrath to thee;
That storm has all been spent on Me:

'Tis I; be not afraid.

This bitter cup fear not to drink;
I know it well - oh! do not shrink,
I tasted it o'er Kedron's brink:

'Tis I; be not afraid.

Mine eyes are watching by thy bed,
Mine arms are underneath thy head,
My blessing is around thee shed:

'Tis I; be not afraid.

When on the other side thy feet
Shall rest 'mid thousand welcomes sweet,
One well-known voice thy heart shall greet;

'Tis I; be not afraid."

From out the dazzling majesty,
Gently He'll lay His hand on thee,
Whispering: "Beloved, lov'st thou me?
'Twas not in vain I died for thee;

'Tis I; be not afraid."

  1. Hi Sharon,

    There is a rhythm in these words of Henry Altemus. They echo with a resounding assurance: "Tis I; be not afraid."

    It reminds me that no matter what I face in this life, I need not fear; I am never alone.

    Blessings and peace.

  2. Hi Sharon,

    Very beautiful! Thanks for sharing. I especially like the verses:

    Mine eyes are watching by thy bed,
    Mine arms are underneath thy head,
    My blessing is around thee shed:

    'Tis I; be not afraid.

    Blessings,
    Judy

  3. Hi Sharon,

    Please call me Judy. I changed my name in my settings so that I wasn't so formal. I use Judith professionally as a writer. Anyway ....

    Thanks for your comment. Much appreciated!

  4. Debbie - In all the "clicking" glitch fiasco from earlier today, I lost your comment. But I DO remember that you said you had a friend who was recently diagnosed with cancer (did I remember correctly?) I'm SO SORRY! These "quaint words" are a sweet reminder of the Lord's loving care. And I also liked the same stanza that spoke to you:

    This bitter cup fear not to drink;
    I know it well - oh! do not shrink...

    Oh Lord, give us courage!

    MTJ - Glad to hear from you today (as always - but earlier problems with my blog makes me especially glad to hear from friends like you!) I really liked this poem too. I might just make that one little phrase a faith motto: 'Tis I; be not afraid!" Thank the Lord, we are NEVER alone!!

    Judy - I'm so glad you liked this post. I have collected several of these old books, and I just love their messages. It's a pleasure to pass on their words to our generation! Thanks for stopping by!

    GOD BLESS!

    P.S. Hopefully, tomorrow will NOT bring any "feed" problems!! I'll be around every day...Lord willing!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)

Thanks for your comments - it is such a joy to be sharing my journey with friends like YOU!
