"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Meek

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: meek

What does the word meek mean to you?

Do you think it's a strong word or a weak word?

When you think of Jesus being meek, what comes to your mind?

Let me know what you think!!

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

  1. I can't claim to have come to this on my own, but I'm a creature of what I have been taught in Word Study.

So... meekness is a grace of the soul excercised primarily toward God that recognizes that both God and his dealings are always right and good.

Jesus was meek. He wasn't meek sometimes or in the quiet times. He was meek at ALL times. It was always about the Father to him, whether He was in the Garden of Gethsemane, carrying the cross to Calvary, or turning tables in the Temple courts.

Meekess doesn't equal timidity. It equals allegience and trust and defines all things within the backdrop of a perfectly good God who is smarter than we are.

I fail God in that I'm not always meek, especially when the fire gets hot.

  2. Oops. It goes without saying but I'll say it that meekness is a strong word.

  3. The word "meek" always brings a picture to my mind of my maternal grandfather...he personified the phrase - servant attitude...that is what meekness means to me...humbly serving others without disdain...and unconditionally loving with a gentle spirit...

I think it is definitely a "strong" word as it takes "more" strength to be meek, than to be headstrong...genuine meekness can only come from the Lord...

Jesus is the Gentle Shepherd...loving and good...regardless of the things I have done or said, He looks on me with love and compassion...instead of what this headstrong daughter deserves...

  4. Debbie said it all in her comments above. Meek is not weak, meek is the strongest. I used to think it was the opposite, like I used to think many things in my own understanding that didn't line up with His Word. This is a great word to think on!

  6. Meek is strong.

When I think of Jesus as meek, I think of someone who is gentle but perseveres.

Reminds me of the tortoise and the hare. The hare zips along and it seems as if he could win any "race" - but the tortoise ends up passing up the hare. His persistence pays off...in a very quiet, meek way.

Have a great Friday and weekend!

  8. Hi Sharon,

What does the word meek mean to you?
It describes an action, or personality trait that is characterized by quiet, and non-confrontational behavior that does not argue or dispute.

Do you think it's a strong word or a weak word?
From a world-view perspective, it is a weak word because it's associated with being timid. From a biblical-view perspective, it is a strong word because it is associated with being Christ-like.

When you think of Jesus being meek, what comes to your mind?
I think of how Jesus demonstrated a life of obedience to the Father. He indicated His attitude when He said, "And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him." The bible also says, "And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
    even death on a cross!
    "
This attitude of obedience is what I think of concerning Christ being meek.

    Blessings and peace.

  11. Great post to ponder! I have enjoyed reading the comments and agree with them all...meek is not weak, but strong. I once heard a definition that meekness is 'disciplined, under control". What a beautiful trait to think over!

  12. Thanks for doing this....I was so blessed by the comments...and then God spoke to me through this, "your husband is meek!" Wow! I have never seen that before, so thank you so much. Now Debbie needs a pat on her back...awesome study!

  13. Hello Sharon,(Shazza in the land of Oz) I think of MEEK as a strong word! To be it reads HUMBLE and thats a virtue, something that oftem takes time to acquire. It is so much easier to run off at the mouth than it is to listen and give a gentle answer. I believe when you know the Savour many trivial things of this world don't irritate the same, you let them go by. You know who you are in the Lord, and as your scripture says, you stand firm in your faith. God Bless.

  14. Hi Sharon -

I heard a pastor describe it this way, "Meekness is power under control."

You asked, "When you think of Jesus being meek, what comes to your mind?"

The first scripture that came to mind is Matthew 11:29 - KJV

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

And this scripture about Moses -

    Numbers 12:3 - KJV

(Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

It is so wonderful that it is a certainty that GOD is in all that is holy!

  15. Have I told you all lately how much I enjoy "Fan the Flame Fridays" with you?!

It's always such a pleasure, and very thought-provoking, to hear your two cents worth (which I happen to think is worth at least a buck or more!).

I think of the word "meek" as meaning - humble, gentle, disciplined strength, harnessed power.

I used to think it was a weak word - ie, "wimpy" - many of the early "portraits" of Jesus added to that image in my mind. But as I grew to know the Lord better, it took on a whole new meaning. Jesus' meekness is a willing putting-aside of His power, in subservient obedience to the will of His Father.

Thank you all for your input - I think we have come up with a very complete picture of what the word "meek" means -

Crystal Mary - May I just say a big WELCOME!! I'm so glad you stopped by today, and added to our discussion. I hope you visit again sometime soon! Blessings to you...

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." Matthew 5:5

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)

Thanks for your comments - it is such a joy to be sharing my journey with friends like YOU!
