QUAINT WORDS

Welcome to "Quaint Words!”

These posts will contain thoughts, poems, and prayers from old books that I have found at antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales (with an occasional treasure from a bookstore).

I love the rhythm and sound of the older English language, and am blessed by other believers who have gone before me!

"GOD HIMSELF HIS OWN BEST GIFT -

Enlarge your desires and your prayers. Do not ask merely for mercies and favours and common gifts. Do not ask God merely to give you bread, and health, and home, and friends, and prosperity; or, rising yet a step higher, do not content yourself with asking for grace to help in temptation, or for strength to fill up your weakness, or for wisdom to guide you in perplexity, or for holiness and purity and power.

Ask for God himself, and then open your heart to receive him. If you have God, you have all other gifts and blessings in him.

And it is him himself that God is willing to give for the asking, not merely the favours and benefits that his hand dispense. Ask most largely."

(From "In Green Pastures" by J.R. Miller, c. 1840-1912)

(A listing of books and authors, and also dates of individual postings from those books, will be found on my "QUAINT WORDS" page)

  1. I think your right - sometimes we ask God for something and we may not believe he'll answer - so we miss it! Sandie

  3. WOW this says it all for me: "Ask for God himself, and then open your heart to receive him. If you have God, you have all other gifts and blessings in him."

Thanks Sharon for sharing this with us and thanks for your prayers and encouragement!

    Sending a hug to you!

  5. Hi Sharon,

What an interesting perspective! Never thought to ask for God himself. Although I do ask for more of the holy spirit, for God to fill me with his spirit to overflowing. Is that the same thing?

    Blessings,
    Judy

  6. Sandie - Keeping my eyes open for unexpected answers!

Charlotte - Glad you liked this one! God is the best gift of all - and the only one we get to keep for eternity!

Lisa - These quaint words really encouraged me, too. And a big hug right back at you!

Sarah - Thanks so much for your very encouraging words. The enemy is really trying to "shout me down" right now. Since last week, you wouldn't believe the things that have happened - so, I totally appreciate what you said, and would treasure your prayers.

Judy - Good point. I think it's very much in the same ballpark, for sure. What I thought of was asking for a sense of Him - just a fullness of His love and light. That, of course, can only come because of the Holy Spirit's presence.

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)

Thanks for your comments - it is such a joy to be sharing my journey with friends like YOU!
