"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Luck

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: luck

How would you define the word luck?

Do you believe there is such a thing as good luck and bad luck?

What do you think the believer's position should be on the concept of luck?

Let me know what you think!!

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

  1. My former pastor always said, "Luck is a pagan concept". I tend to agree with that. Luck implies that there is no plan or divine providence guiding and guarding events. They just "happen", and if you just happen to be in the right place at the right time, you benefit from them and call it good.

I think wishing someone luck or using the term is just verbal habit for most people. To truly believe in luck (good or bad) or superstitious nonsense that might affect that luck is a willful sin, IMO.

When I taught literature is a Christian school, and we learned the major literary conflicts, we didn't use the typical term Man vs. Fate. I always said Man vs. Providence. The kids knew that fate was the commonly accepted term, but I wanted them to know that as Christians, we look at things differently.

  2. I don't know if it is luck or bad luck - but I do know when I am close to Jesus and I feel happy and I'm right on - things go better and when I am grumpy and not on tract things don't go as well! sandie

  3. No, no...don't use that word and don't believe in it at all...I am very careful to catch myself if a phrase starts to come out, "good luck"...no, no don't go there at all

  5. I tend to associate 'luck' with superstition! Luck tends to equate good/positive happenings (or the opposite) to an 'unknown entity'.

  6. I grew up using this word a lot. As I've gotten older I have realized it isn't luck. I'm learning not to ever use the word. Thank you for the reminder.
    Blessings,

  7. I believe in grace....and His will...whatever He determines will become reality. And I think it starts with a willing heart...someone open to Him.

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)
