"FAN THE FLAME" FRIDAY - Mistake

Welcome to "Fan the Flame" Friday.

This is a weekly post that will be "short and sweet" (kinda like me...)

Just a word and a phrase, a sentence or a question...just a little something to "fan the flame" of your creativity!

Today's word: mistake

What is a mistake?

How do you feel when you make a mistake?

What is the difference between a mistake and a sin?

Let me know what you think!!

"This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

  1. Well, I guess a mistake is something in your every day life that you don't intend to do or do incorrectly. I think I have had some mistakes in relationships and in choices.

Maybe I'm hard-line, but I believe that even if you don't intend to do it, that which is sin is sin, whether you "mistakenly do it" or not.

Thanks to grace, I can repent of sinful mistakes. To think that I can get a pass with an Almighty God by saying, "oops" doesn't cut it with me. (I'm speaking INWARD as in my own behavior not outward toward others)

Now, as far as non-sinful mistakes like, say... the sofa choice in my den? Well, I just feel like an idiot, but at least it wasn't a sin. Ha!

  2. The difference between a mistake and a sin - that is a tough one - a mistake can not be a sin or it could be a sin - knowing a head of time. A sin could be innocent too until you learn that it is a sin then it is a sin. Whew. Love, sandie

  3. A mistake is maybe something we don't do deliberately, like when we make a mistake on a math problem we are trying to solve, a sin is something we chose to do deliberately because we know the right thing to do, like we lie, but we know we shouldn't lie. This is tough to try to figure out.....Got to think about it.

I think we can repent of our sins and learn from our mistakes.

hope all is going well with your moving experience!

  4. Came across you from Spiritual sunday, my first visit and you present what at first appears to be a tough question- a mistake is when I without intention add or substract wrongly in my check book something I can possibly easily fix- God does not break fellowship with me because of this. A sin is when I do something against the word of God be it deliberate or unintentionally and I break fellowship with God, I than must come into agreement with God I sinned-did wrong, confess and repent. Thanks for leading me to tink about this. Be blessed this Sabbath in holy rest.

  5. OK, true confession - I came up with this "Fan the Flame" word because I totally forgot to post this until Friday morning!

    What is a mistake?

A mistake is an error in judgment, a inadvertent oversight, a faux pas. Mistakes are "Oops" moments. Most mistakes are innocent, and do not result in terrible consequences. However, sometimes they can have more serious ramifications - like making a wrong lane change on the freeway, for instance.

How do you feel when you make a mistake?

Just like I did this morning - dumb, stupid, embarrassed. Mistakes are reminders that we are infallible humans, and we don't like being reminded of that fact.

What is the difference between a mistake and a sin?

You guys have given such good answers to this question. Mistakes are inadvertent. Though some sin can also be inadvertent, usually it is intentional and willful. Sin is the falling short - the failure to measure up to God's perfect standard of holiness. The Bible defines sin as knowing what is the right thing to do, and then not doing it. Sin is a sign of slavery - a death sentence that required the atoning work of our Savior to remedy.

Thank goodness - the Lord does not keep track of my mistakes, nor does he count my sins against me!

    GOD BLESS!

  6. Hi Sharon,
I made the mistake of not coming to your site on Friday because I got busy with some other things. Hope it's not too late to post this response.

To me (and maybe to God) a mistake is something that is unintentional, and is not necessarily showing that someone's heart has an evil intent. However, when a mistake keeps being repeated it shows that the person's heart is not committed to change. A habitual "mistake" is sin.

  7. Just saw a graphic on Facebook that said the first time is a mistake. The second time is a choice. Not sure this is always true, but it is something to think about.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)
