QUAINT WORDS

Welcome to "Quaint Words!”

These posts will contain thoughts, poems, and prayers from old books that I have found at antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales (with an occasional treasure from a bookstore).

I love the rhythm and sound of the older English language, and am blessed by other believers who have gone before me!

(A listing of books and authors, and also dates of individual postings from those books, will be found on my "QUAINT WORDS" page)

"Do we give always our best and give it with a smile? The big things of life we gladly give or would gladly give to God were He to ask; but are we quite ready always for the little sacrifice?

Jesus, you know that I have told You time and time again that I love You and would love You daily more and more. I mean it all, dear Lord, yes, every word...I will give You just whatever You may ask, be it little or be it great, be it myself or what I call my own.

Only give me Your nerving grace, that when the hour of sacrificing comes, my courage and my love may not grow frail and spoil the work I promised."

(From "My Changeless Friend" by Francis P. Le Buffe, c. 1921)

  2. I too love quaint words. I even started reading a King James version Bible this week that was just given to me! Never thought I would do that. Wish I could join you antique shopping. I'm almost always drawn to the books, too. We would have a good time!!!

    Love,
    Mary

  3. Oh, I love this one! I could have said this part myself:

"Only give me Your NERVING GRACE, that when the hour of sacrificing comes, my courage and my love may not grow frail and spoil the work I promised."

That kind of goes with the trust question from Fan the Flame Friday.

  4. Hi Sharon,
Yes great words, how we need the Lord's strength, and how willing he is to give it, if we only Trust. Have a blessed sunday. Nita.

  5. Hi Sharon,

These are such powerful words, expressing a genuine and sincere heart. I like how he expresses his desire, "...give me Your nerving grace, that when the hour of sacrificing comes, my courage and my love may not grow frail and spoil the work I promised."

I read this and I am humbled.

    Blessings and peace.

  6. Give me your unnerving grace - I am going to remember that - when I need to sacrifice.

  7. What beautiful, timeless words. A reminder of living a surrendered life coming on the heels of a token quit claim deed we completed for our Bible study where we gave all we have and all we are to our Lord.

  8. Joan - Thanks. I love how these "old" books are still so relevant!

Mary - We'd have a GREAT time! Might end up spending too much, but I won't tell if you don't! There is something about the KJV Bible that is so comforting. Sometimes, the "older" English just makes everything sound more "weighty!"

Debbie - You know, I didn't plan today's post to coordinate with yesterday's! What a happy accident. Yes, I loved that phrase, too. I SO NEED nerving grace! When the moment comes, Lord, don't let me chicken out!

Nita - I wonder how many times we fall down, weary and defeated, when all we had to do was "ask." I can almost picture God saying, "I've been here the whole time..." Hope you have a wonderful Sunday, too.

MTJ - You know, you picked a word that really captures what makes me love these quaint words - sincerity. There is a genuine quality to the writing that appeals to me. I am humbled, too. So glad you stopped by.

Sandie - Kinda gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, "What nerve!" LOL! Sacrifice takes courage, for sure.

Guidance - What a wonderful idea - the quit claim deed. I love that! A lovely gesture, a real act of surrender. I am reminded of Psalm 51:17:
"The sacrifice you want is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God."

GOD BLESS, friends. Have a worship-full Sunday, and please come back soon!

Yes, Amen to this piece, lady!

May we valiantly stand fast in the Lord with full armour steadfastly - boldly proclaiming and living the truth of the gospel of the kingdom of Almighty GOD!

  10. Sandra - AMEN! I love how you use that warrior language that I love so much!
    VALIANTLY stand fast.
    BOLDLY proclaim.
    LIVE the truth.

    YES!

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)

Thanks for your comments - it is such a joy to be sharing my journey with friends like YOU!
