QUAINT WORDS

Welcome to "Quaint Words!”

These posts will contain thoughts, poems, and prayers from old books that I have found at antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales (with an occasional treasure from a bookstore).

I love the rhythm and sound of the older English language, and am blessed by other believers who have gone before me!

(A listing of books and authors, and also dates of individual postings from those books, will be found on my "QUAINT WORDS" page)

"Let us then cut every cord, and remove every barrier, that our souls may find no hindrance to their mounting up with wings as eagles to heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

We are commanded to have our hearts filled with song of rejoicing and to make inward melody to the Lord. But unless we mount up with wings this is impossible, for the only creature that can sing is the creature that flies...

Do you know anything of this life on wings, dear reader? Do you "mount up" continually to God out of and above earth's cares and trials, to that higher plane of life where all is peace and triumph; or do you plod wearily along on foot through the midst of your trials, and let them overwhelm you at every turn?

...It depends only upon the facts of an entire surrender and an absolute trust.

The lark soars singing from its nest,
And tell aloud
His trust in God, and so is blest
Let come what cloud.

He has no store, he sows no seed,
Yet sings aloud, and doth not heed.
Through cloudy day or scanty feed,
He sings to shame
Men who forget in fear of need
A Father's name.

The heart that trusts, forever sings,
And feels as light as it has wings;
A well of peace within it springs.
Come good or ill,
Whate'er today or morrow bring,
It is His will."

(From "The Christian's Secret Of a Happy Life" by Hannah Whitall Smith, c. 1888)

  1. Hi Sharon,

I love these words by Hannah Smith. They impart the desire to sincerely trust the Lord with my life.

"The heart that trusts, forever sings,
    And feels as light as it has wings;
A well of peace within it springs.
    Come good or ill,
    Whate'er today or morrow bring,
    It is His will.
    "

The heart that trusts, forever sings...It is His will. These words stir up a passion and desire that says, "Yes Lord!"

    Blessings and peace.

  2. Okay, I choose to sing today. This is not easy. While remodeling the guest bathroom yesterday, my husband called me at work to advise that a pipe broke and he fixed it but today we have a leak...back under the house he goes. Pray for us to be able to repair this problem.

    Love you,
    Mary

  3. Beautiful.

    My favorite part is this:
"We are commanded to have our hearts filled with song of rejoicing and to make inward melody to the Lord. But unless we mount up with wings this is impossible, for the only creature that can sing is the creature that flies."

  5. MTJ - I really like this book. It's my favorite of the "antique" ones I have. She has such a simple, yet eloquent, way of speaking truth. I was stirred by these words, too.

Mary - I will keep this in my prayers. Sometimes singing is something we have to CHOOSE to do - especially when life goes a little off-key!

Debbie - Yeah, that's good, isn't it? I like the phrase "inward melody." Am I doing that? Sometimes - but often, no. I'm doing a lot of "outward" complaining. But, my heart must learn how to sing - only birds FLY...

Carrie - So glad you liked this. Sometimes the "old" writers say it in just the right way!

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)

Thanks for your comments - it is such a joy to be sharing my journey with friends like YOU!
