QUAINT WORDS

Welcome to "Quaint Words!”

These posts will contain thoughts, poems, and prayers from old books that I have found at antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales (with an occasional treasure from a bookstore).

I love the rhythm and sound of the older English language, and am blessed by other believers who have gone before me!

"As we go through life we learn more and more to doubt our own wishing and choosing, as we see how little really comes from our own ways and plans. We learn not to choose at all ourselves, but to let God choose for us.

No doubt we miss heavenly blessings many a time, because we have not faith to take them in their disguise of pain or grief, preferring our own way to our Father's. Then God sometimes lets us have what in our wilfulness we persist in choosing, just to teach us that our own way is not the best.

We learn at last to plead, 'Bless me, my Father', not daring to indicate in what manner the blessing shall come, but preferring that it shall be as God wills."

(From "In Green Pastures" by J.R. Miller, c. 1840-1912)

(A listing of books and authors, and also dates of individual postings from those books, will be found on my "QUAINT WORDS" page)

  1. I have to admit that I need to understand when it's God will and not mine.
    Blessings,

  3. Let's make it three who are still trying to learn God's will vs. my will. Thanks for reminding me.

  5. Ginger - Don't you wish that we had that wisdom - to know God's will all the time? The secret is in the seeking. God promises we will find His wisdom when we trust in Him, and lean not on our own understanding.

Trisha - Yup, I'm still a work in progress, too! Glad you were encouraged by this - I also appreciated these quaint words. I liked the thought that sometimes blessings come in disguise, and we must learn to appreciate God's perfect ways!

Sandie - Hey, add me to that group, too! So hard to determine sometimes - it this me or Him? That's one reason why I want to get to know Him better - so that I can hear Him more clearly.

Mary - I liked what you said!! Sometimes it's a matter of knowing God's will - but all too often it's a matter of obeying His will. What an example we have in our wonderful Savior. He had every right and ability to claim His will, but He did not. He humbly yielded in total trust and obedience to His Father. May He teach us how to do the same.

    GOD BLESS!

"So [I] have been greatly encouraged in the midst of [my] troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives [me] new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord. How [I] thank God for you!" (1 Thessalonians 3:7-9)

Thanks for your comments - it is such a joy to be sharing my journey with friends like YOU!
